Kinematics, abundances and origin of brightest cluster galaxies We present kinematic parameters and absorption line strengths for threebrightest cluster galaxies, NGC 6166, 6173 and 6086. We find that NGC6166 has a velocity dispersion profile which rises beyond 20arcsec fromthe nucleus, with a halo velocity dispersion in excess of 400kms^-1. Allthree galaxies show a positive and constant h_4 Hermite moment. Therising velocity dispersion profile in NGC 6166 thus indicates anincreasing mass-to-light ratio. Rotation is low in all three galaxies, and NGC 6173 and 6086 show possible kinematically decoupled cores. Allthree galaxies have Mg_2 gradients similar to those found in normalbright ellipticals, which are not steep enough to support simpledissipative collapse models, but these could be accompanied bydissipationless mergers which would tend to dilute the abundancegradients. The [Mg/Fe] ratios in NGC 6166 and 6086 are higher than thatfound in NGC 6173, and if NGC 6173 is typical of normal brightellipticals, this suggests that cDs cannot form from late mergers ofnormal galaxies.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue. We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

Photometric surveys of suspected small-amplitude red variables. 3: an AAVSO photometric photometry survey We have carried out a survey of the photometric (V) variability of 61'known' or suspected small-amplitude red variables, mostly M giants.Approximately two-thirds appear to be variable; several suspectedvariable comparison stars have also been identified. The incidence andaverage amplitude of variability increase rapidly from spectral type M0III to M6 III.

A photometric survey of suspected small-amplitude red variables For approximately 100 days in the summer of 1990, photometricobservations were carried out of 21 red-giant stars whose variabilitywas suspected or poorly documented. Two were constant, six weremarginally variable, and 16 were definitely variable. For these, theamplitude and timescale were estimated, though the estimates wererestricted by the limited run of data. There was a slight tendency forstars with longer timescales and/or later spectral types to have largeramplitudes.

Precise equatorial coordinates of double and multiple systems - an astronomical support to the HIPPARCOS mission Results are presented on determinations of precise positions (to theaccuracy required for their possible inclusion in the Hipparcos InputCatalogue) of 623 double and multiple stars (126 of them newlydiscovered) from the measurement of 39 plates taken at the ESO and theAstronomical Observatory of Torino, obtained between 1984 and 1987. Thetable includes the index number, the name of the discoverer, binarycomponent according to the designation by the Catalogue de Composantesd'etoiles Doubles et Multiples (CCDM), the magnitude of the componentsas given in the CCDM, epoch of observation, right ascension referred tothe J2000.0 equinox, declination, position angle referred to the J2000.0North Pole, angular separation, and DM and ADS numbers.

The rotational break for G giants New high-resolution spectroscopic observations have been obtained for 73G giants. Fourier analysis of their spectral lines yields rotationvelocities and macroturbulence dispersions. Combined with data from anearlier study, total of 86 analyses of luminosity class III giants isnow available. The existence of a rotational discontinuity forluminosity class III giants is confirmed, but it is found to be near G0III rather than G5 III, as indicated in the earlier work. Evidence forrotation being a single-valued function of spectral type isstrengthened. The observations are interpreted in terms of adynamo-generated magnetic brake and a 'rotostat' phenomenon.

Narrow-band photometry of late-type stars. II This paper presents extensive narrow-band photometry in the Uppsalasystem supplementing earlier published mesurements so that data now areavailable for all late-type stars brighter than V = 6.05 and a number ofgalactic cluster members. Numerous UBV and BV measurements are alsopublished. The data are used to determine relations for the predictionof UBV intrinsic colors for late-type stars from the narrow-bandmeasurements. The main purpose of the data is to constitute the basisfor the determination of solar-neighborhood space densities of late-typestars, mainly giants of different kinds; these space densities will becombined with narrow-band data for fainter stars in the north Galacticpole region to yield the decrease of space density with distance fromthe galactic plane for many kinds of late-type stars.

Visual multiples. VIII - 1000 MK types A total of 1000 new classifications are given for stars brighter than B= 8.0 mag in the Aitken double star catalog. The classificationssupplement 865 classifications obtained in 1981 and 1984. Among thenewly discovered stars are 12 new Ap stars, eight Lambda Bootis stars, one Ba II star, and 60 Am stars. A detailed list of the newclassifications is given.

MK classification for F- and G-type stars. IV MK spectral classifications are given for 112 stars brighter than mv =7.5, having HD types F2-G5. The classifications were made on slitspectrograms of dispersion 75 A/mm at H gamma.
