IC 2395 and BH 47: Only one open cluster in the Vela constellation We report UBV photoelectric photometry for 273 stars in the fields ofthe open clusters IC 2395 and BH 47. Our postulate is that, rather thantwo different clusters in this region of Vela, there is only one, whichwe call IC 2395 = BH 47. The cluster is centered at about alpha =8{h} 42fm 5, delta = -48degr 06farcm 8 (2000), itsangular diameter being ~ 19'. The analysis of the photometric datayields 61 probable cluster members and 16 possible members. Photometricmembership probabilities show good agreement with those obtained from aproper motion study for 21 stars in common. The reddening across thecluster appears to be uniform, the mean E(B-V) value being 0.09 +/-0.02. The true distance modulus is (V-MV)0 = 9.52+/- 0.10, corresponding to a distance from the Sun of (800 +/- 40) pcand 48 pc below the Galactic plane. The cluster age, determined byfitting isochrones with core overshooting, turns out to be (6 +/- 2)Myr. There is a strong likelihood that IC 2395 = BH 47 is physicallyconnected to the Vela OB1C association.
| Absolute proper motions of open clusters. I. Observational data Mean proper motions and parallaxes of 205 open clusters were determinedfrom their member stars found in the Hipparcos Catalogue. 360 clusterswere searched for possible members, excluding nearby clusters withdistances D < 200 pc. Members were selected using ground basedinformation (photometry, radial velocity, proper motion, distance fromthe cluster centre) and information provided by Hipparcos (propermotion, parallax). Altogether 630 certain and 100 possible members werefound. A comparison of the Hipparcos parallaxes with photometricdistances of open clusters shows good agreement. The Hipparcos dataconfirm or reject the membership of several Cepheids in the studiedclusters. | Spectroscopy and Time Variability of Absorption Lines in the Direction of the Vela Supernova Remnant We present high-resolution (R~75,000), high signal-to-noise (S/N~100) CaII λ3933.663 and Na I λλ5889.951, 5895.924 spectraof 68 stars in the direction of the Vela supernova remnant. The spectracomprise the most complete high-resolution, high S/N optical survey ofearly-type stars in this region of the sky. A subset of the sight lineshas been observed at multiple epochs, 1993/1994 and 1996. Of the 13stars observed twice, seven have spectra revealing changes in theequivalent width and/or velocity structure of lines, most of which arisefrom remnant gas. Such time variability has been reported previously forthe sight lines toward HD 72089 and HD 72997 by Danks & Sembach andfor HD 72127 by Hobbs and coworkers. We have confirmed the ongoing timevariability of these spectra and present new evidence of variability inthe spectra of HD 73658, HD 74455, HD 75309, and HD 75821. We havetabulated Na I and Ca II absorption-line information for the sight linesin our sample to serve as a benchmark for further investigations of thedynamics and evolution of the Vela SNR. | Studies of the ISM in the Vela Supernova Remnant Recent observations of the Vela SNR in the ISM species Ca II and Na Iare presented and discussed in the context of the ``break-down'' of theSpitzer-Routly effect. Variations in line profiles with time aredemonstrated, eventually through a statistical approach a description ofcloud structure will be possible. The IS lines in ~ 70 sightlines areused to determine an accurate distance to the Vela SNR of 250 +/- 30 pc.Finally a discussion of future observations are given relatinginformation obtained from measurements of near-by ISM to more distantintergalactic medium.

| An IUE survey of interstellar H I LY alpha absorption. 1: Column densities We measure Galactic interstellar neutral hydrogen column densities byanalyzing archival interstellar Ly alpha absorption line data toward 554B2 and hotter stars observed at high resolution with the IUE satellite.This study more than doubles the number of lines of sight with measuresof N(H I) based on Ly alpha. We have included the scattered lightbackground correction algorithm of Bianchi and Bohlin in our datareduction. We use the correlation between the Balmer discontinuity(c1) index and the stellar Ly alpha absorption in order toassess the effects of stellar Ly alpha contamination. Approximately 40%of the B stars with measured (c1) index, exhibit seriousstellar Ly alpha contamination. One table contains the derived values ofthe interstellar N(H I) for 393 stars with at most small amounts ofstellar contamination. Another lists the observed values of total N(H I)for 161 stars with suspected stellar Ly alpha contamination and/oruncertain stellar parameters.
| IUE-IRAS studies of the infrared cirrus The 60 and 100 micron cirrus emission around 256 lines of sight in theIRAS all-sky survey was measured, and the flux averages were used tostudy the distribution, variations, and correlations of the IRASinfrared cirrus fluxes with various interstellar parameters. It wasfound that the 60 and 100 micron fluxes correlate with the depletion ofSi and show a trend with the depletion of Fe for 51 lines of sighttoward the Galactic halo. No correlation was found with the abundancesof Si, Mn, Fe, S, or Zn or with abundance ratios for the full sample of256 stars. An abundance ratio of about 3 x 10 to the 7th by numberrelative to H was derived from 60 and 100 micron flux ratios and the Hcolumn along the line of sight; this ratio appears to decrease by afactor of 10 into the halo.
| Galactic interstellar abundance surveys with IUE. III - Silicon, manganese, iron, sulfur, and zinc This paper continues a survey of intestellar densities, abundances, andcloud structure in the Galaxy using the IUE satellite. A statisticaldata set of 223 O3-B2.5 stars is constructed, including 53 stars in theGalactic halo. It is found that S II lines in B stars, of luminosityclasses IV and V, have possible contamination from stellar S II,particular for stars with v sin i less than 200 km/s. The meanlogarithmic depletions are -1.00, -1.19. -0.63, and -0.23 (Si, Mn,Fe,S,Zn). Depletions of Si, Mn, and Fe correlate with the mean hydrogendensity n-bar along the line of sight, with a turnover for n-bar greaterthan 1/cm. Sulfur depletions correlate with n-bar along the line ofsight. The slight Zn depletion correlation also appears to bestatistically insignificant. No correlation of depletion is found withthe physical density derived from H2 rotational states in 21 lines ofsight. Depletion variations in the disk are consistent with a Galacticabundance gradient or with enhanced mean depletions in the anticenterregion.
| Galactic interstellar abundance surveys with IUE. II - The equivalent widths and column densities This paper continues a survey of interstellar densities, abundances, andcloud structure in the Galaxy, using the International UltravioletExplorer (IUE) satellite. Equivalent widths of 18 ultraviolet resonancetransitions are presented and column densities for Si II, Mn II, Fe II,S II, and Zn II toward 261 early-type stars are derived. Theseequivalent widths and column densities agree within the stated errors ofearlier Copernicus, BUSS, or IUE surveys of Mn II, Fe II, S II, and ZnII for 45 stars in common. The column densities are derived fromsingle-component curves of growth with a common b-value based on that ofFe II and Si II.
| Radial velocities in three fields along the southern galactic equator A list of radial velocities for 764 stars is given for three fields inthe Vela-Carina region of the galaxy. They were obtained from GPO-platestaken at La Silla and reduced following Fehrenbach's method.Slit-spectra were collected with the 152 cm-spectrographic telescope atLa Silla, to derive an accurate radial velocity for a sufficient numberof calibration stars: out of the 29 stars, 26 had no formerly publishedvalue. The global motions of 10 to 14 km/s can be considered as normalon the basis of galactic rotation. Some stars, however, show highvelocities, and are therefore marked with one or two asterisks in thetable.
| Galactic interstellar abundance surveys with IUE. I - Neutral hydrogen A survey is initiated of interstellar densities, abundances, and cloudstructure in the Galaxy, using the International Ultraviolet Explorer.From high-resolution (0.1-A) spectra, interstellar column densities arederived toward 244 early-type stars by fitting the damping wings of theLy-alpha absorption line. Published B-V photometry is used to deriveE(B-V) color excesses, stellar distances r, and the mean hydrogendensities, n-bar = N(H I)/r. The data set includes stars out to r = 8.5kpc and E(B-V) = 0.86, with 68 stars in the galactic halo (absolute bgreater than 20 deg). The statistical sample consists of 205 stars oftype O3-B2.5 within 5 kpc (53 stars in the halo). The column densities,log N(H I), range from less than 19.44 per square centimeter for alphaVir to 21.81 for HD 37061. A statistical analysis of the E(B-V)distribution suggests variations in the line-of-sight cloud density andthe mean reddening per cloud.
| A study of visual double stars with early type primaries. IV Astrophysical data Astrophysical parameters (MK class, color excess, absolute magnitude,distance, effective temperature, mass, and age) are derived fromcalibrations of the uvby-beta indices for the members of 253 doublestars with O or B type primaries and faint secondaries. The photometricspectral classification is compared to the MK classes, and the agreementis very good. The derived data together with spectroscopic and JHKL dataare used for deciding which pairs are likely to be physical and whichare optical, and it is shown that 98 (34 percent) of the secondaries arelikely to be members of physical systems. For 90 percent of the physicalpairs the projected separation between the components is less than25,000 AU. A majority of the physical secondaries are late-type stars,and 50 percent of them are contracting towards the zero-agemain-sequence. Also presented are new uvby-beta data for 43 secondariesand a computer program for determining astrophysical parameters fromuvby-beta data.
| High-resolution IUE observations of interstellar absorption lines in the VELA supernova remnant Ultraviolet spectra of 45 stars in the vicinity of the Vela supernovaremnant were recorded by the short-wavelength echelle spectrographaboard the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE). Over one-third ofthe stars show interstellar absorption lines at large radial velocities(greater than 60 km/s). The mapping of these high-velocity components inthe sky suggests the motions are chaotic, rather than from a coherentexpansion of the remnant material. In accord with earlier conclusionsfrom Copernicus data, the gas at high velocity exhibits higher thannormal ionization and shows substantially less depletion of nonvolatileelements than normal interstellar material at low velocities. Relativelystrong lines from neutral carbon in the two excited fine-structurestates indicate that the neutral clouds within the remnant have hadtheir pressures enhanced by the passage of the blast wave from thesupernova. Also, the remnant seems to show a significant enhancement inthe abundances of low-velocity Si IV, C IV, and N V over those found inthe general interstellar medium.
| UBV photometry for southern OB stars New UBV photometry of 1227 OB stars in the southern Milky Way ispresented. For 1113 of these stars, MK spectral types have been reportedpreviously in a comprehensive survey to B = 10.0 mag.

| A study of visual double stars with early type primaries. I - Spectroscopic results Attention is given to spectral peculiarities found in data on thespectral classes of 486 stars in 254 visual doublet or multiplet systemswith O or B type primaries, in order to isolate a group of very youngstars that may serve for the study of early stellar evolutioncharacteristics. It is noted that the material contains a substantialfraction of secondaries that are likely to be physical, and that severalof these may be in the premain-sequence phase of stellar evolution, orhave reached the zero-age main sequence.
| The VELA star cloud. II - Early-type stars and long-period Cepheids near the VELA pulsar Intermediate band, H-beta and RI observations of some 200 stars andthree Cepheids in a small region centered on the Vela pulsar have shownthe presence of additional members of the Vela sheet (450 pc), as wellas two more distant associations, Vel OB1 (800 pc) and Vel OB2 (1800pc). Vel OB2, which may be only some 5-million yr old, probably containsSW (23.4 d), RZ (20.4 d), and SX (19.6 d) Vel. All three Cepheids havean overabundance of metals, relative to the sun, if the photometricindices are abundance dependent only. The luminosities of the threeCepheids, plus AH Vel in the Vela sheet and two other southern Cepheidsdiscussed previously, all based on an independent photometric luminositycalibration, do not indicate a need for a major revision of the zeropoint of the period-luminosity relation.
| Interstellar gas in the GUM Nebula A survey of the interstellar gas near the Gum Nebula by opticalobservation of 67 stars at Ca II, 42 stars at Na I, and 14 stars in theUV with the Copernicus satellite provided radial velocities and columndensities for all resolved absorption components. Velocity dispersionsfor gas in the Gum Nebula are not significantly larger than in thegeneral interstellar medium; the ionization structure is predominantlythat of an H II region with moderately high ionization. Denser, morehighly ionized clouds are concentrated toward the Gum Nebula; theseclouds do not show the anomalously high ionization observed in the Velaremnant clouds.

| Ultraviolet absorption lines associated with the VELA supernova remnant Two stars behind the Vela supernova remnant and two stars offset fromthe remnant have been observed with the UV spectrometer aboard theCopernicus satellite. Over 200 interstellar atomic and molecularabsorption features between 1000 and 1400 A have been identified andmeasured for radial velocity and equivalent width. In many cases,additional information was obtained by studying the detailed shapes ofthe recorded profiles. Most of the stars show several absorptioncomponents, with clouds of the highest radial velocity appearing in thespectra of stars behind the remnant. For each component, columndensities were derived using velocity dispersion parameters whichyielded the most self-consistent results. Qualitatively, the gas towardthe remnant exhibits a number of unusual properties, when compared withnormal interstellar material. First, abnormally high radial velocitieswere evident. Second, the degree of ionization of some elementssuggested the existence of ionizing processes significantly more potentthan those found in general regions of space. Finally, an investigationof electron densities shows that much of the gas, especially that athigh velocity, must exist in the form of relatively thin sheets orfilaments. If cosmic abundances prevail, the column densities ofhigh-velocity excited material suggest that H-alpha emission measurescould be as large as 100 sq cm/cu pc.
