The distance and structure of the Coalsack. I - Photometric data The results of UBV and H-beta photometry for 284 stars of spectral typesB to F located in the area of the dark cloud Coalsack are presented. Most of the present stars are brighter than 10.0 mag and are classifiedin the MK system of Houk and Cowley (1975). For each star, the bestvalues for the extinction and distance modulus are provided, withtypical estimated errors of + or - 0.08 mag for the extinction and + or- 0.32 mag for the distance modulus. Possible misclassifications andspectral peculiarities are noted for several of the stars.

Photometric zero-point stars in Magellanic cloud clusters Photoelectric UBV measurements of faint stars in the Magellanic Cloudclusters NGC 339, NGC 458, NGC 2004, and NGC 2164, obtained with the1.5-m Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in 1972 and 1973, arepresented. The present as-yet unpublished sample of stars range in Vbrightness from 15.2 to 18.0, and in (B-V) color from -0.20 to + 1.82.The data provide zero-point standards for use both in these clusters andin other clusters in the Magellanic Clouds.

Secondary standards for the Stromgren UVBY system Observations of 158 E region stars have been made in the Stromgrensystem, using the 46-cm reflector at Cape Town. They are mostly brighterthan eighth magnitude and are intended for use as secondary standardsfor the four-color system. The E region relative zero points are definedwith a precision of + or - 0.001 mag, and the internal standard errorsof the colors life between + or - 0.001 and + or - 0.002 mag.

UBV photometry of E region standard stars of intermediate brightness Photometry data are given for 335 stars in the nine E regions.Observations were made using a photometer and filters on the 47 cmreflector at Cape Town. The stellar dispersions are summarized. Data arepresented in tabular form.

The Hyades main sequence Intermediate band, H-beta and RI observations of 72 Hyades cluster starsto V = 11 mag are reported and discussed. A modulus of 3.2 mag isderived on the basis of a comparison with field stars of large parallax. Also presented are observations of 98 main-sequence stars of the Hyadesgroup that were previously found to be group members from kinematicalconsiderations. Parallaxes of the group stars, computed on theassumption that they are members of an extended Hyades cluster, yieldmean values of (U, V, W) = (+40.5, -18.4, -4.9) km/s, with dispersionsof (2.3, 2.3, 6.0) km/s, compared with (+41.7, -18.4, -2.0) and (2.6,1.3, 1.9) km/s for the brightest cluster members. It is noted that allthe stars discussed can be considered as members of a supercluster inwhich only a slight relaxation control of the W velocities is presentfor stars far from the nucleus. Evidence is found, including that of thePraesepe cluster at Z = +80 pc, for some interchange between the U, V,and W velocities in stars farthest from the galactic plane, with thetotal cluster velocity being maintained.
