A photometric study of the light variations of the triple system DG Leo Multi-site and multi-year differential photometry of the triple star DGLeo reveals a complex frequency spectrum that can be modelled as thecombination of at least three δ Scuti type frequencies in therange 11.5-13 c/d (with semi-amplitudes of 2-7 mmag) and a superimposedslow variability of larger amplitude. The period of the slow variationfits very well with half the orbital period of the inner spectroscopicbinary indicating the presence of ellipsoidal variations caused by thetidally deformed components in a close configuration. These findings,together with the results of a recent spectroscopic analysis (showingthat the system consists of a pair of mild Am stars and one A-typecomponent of normal solar composition), infer that DG Leo is anextremely interesting asteroseismic target. Identification of whichcomponent(s) of this multiple system is (or are) pulsating anddetermination of the excited pulsation modes will both contribute to amuch better understanding of the non-trivial link between multiplicity,chemical composition, rotation, and pulsation in the lower part of theclassical Cepheid instability strip.
| Spectral Classification of Stars in A Supplement to the Bright Star Catalogue MK spectral types are given for about 584 stars in A Supplement to theBright Star Catalogue. These are compared with Hipparcos parallaxes tocheck the reliability of those classifications. The estimated errors are+/-1.2 subtypes, and 10% of the luminosity classes may be wrong.
| Speckle Interferometry of New and Problem Hipparcos Binaries. II. Observations Obtained in 1998-1999 from McDonald Observatory The Hipparcos satellite made measurements of over 9734 known doublestars, 3406 new double stars, and 11,687 unresolved but possible doublestars. The high angular resolution afforded by speckle interferometrymakes it an efficient means to confirm these systems from the ground,which were first discovered from space. Because of its coverage of adifferent region of angular separation-magnitude difference(ρ-Δm) space, speckle interferometry also holds promise toascertain the duplicity of the unresolved Hipparcos ``problem'' stars.Presented are observations of 116 new Hipparcos double stars and 469Hipparcos ``problem stars,'' as well as 238 measures of other doublestars and 246 other high-quality nondetections. Included in these areobservations of double stars listed in the Tycho-2 Catalogue andpossible grid stars for the Space Interferometry Mission.
| Sixth Catalogue of Fundamental Stars (FK6). Part III. Additional fundamental stars with direct solutions The FK6 is a suitable combination of the results of the HIPPARCOSastrometry satellite with ground-based data, measured over a longinterval of time and summarized mainly in the FK5. Part III of the FK6(abbreviated FK6(III)) contains additional fundamental stars with directsolutions. Such direct solutions are appropriate for single stars or forobjects which can be treated like single stars. Part III of the FK6contains in total 3272 stars. Their ground-based data stem from thebright extension of the FK5 (735 stars), from the catalogue of remainingSup stars (RSup, 732 stars), and from the faint extension of the FK5(1805 stars). From the 3272 stars in Part III, we have selected 1928objects as "astrometrically excellent stars", since their instantaneousproper motions and their mean (time-averaged) ones do not differsignificantly. Hence most of the astrometrically excellent stars arewell-behaving "single-star candidates" with good astrometric data. Thesestars are most suited for high-precision astrometry. On the other hand,354 of the stars in Part III are Δμ binaries in the sense ofWielen et al. (1999). Many of them are newly discovered probablebinaries with no other hitherto known indication of binarity. The FK6gives, besides the classical "single-star mode" solutions (SI mode),other solutions which take into account the fact that hidden astrometricbinaries among "apparently single-stars" introduce sizable "cosmicerrors" into the quasi-instantaneously measured HIPPARCOS proper motionsand positions. The FK6 gives, in addition to the SI mode, the "long-termprediction (LTP) mode" and the "short-term prediction (STP) mode". TheseLTP and STP modes are on average the most precise solutions forapparently single stars, depending on the epoch difference with respectto the HIPPARCOS epoch of about 1991. The typical mean error of anFK6(III) proper motion in the single-star mode is 0.59 mas/year. This isa factor of 1.34 better than the typical HIPPARCOS errors for thesestars of 0.79 mas/year. In the long-term prediction mode, in whichcosmic errors are taken into account, the FK6(III) proper motions have atypical mean error of 0.93 mas/year, which is by a factor of about 2better than the corresponding error for the HIPPARCOS values of 1.83mas/year (cosmic errors included).
| Radial velocities. Measurements of 2800 B2-F5 stars for HIPPARCOS Radial velocities have been determined for a sample of 2930 B2-F5 stars,95% observed by the Hipparcos satellite in the north hemisphere and 80%without reliable radial velocity up to now. Observations were obtainedat the Observatoire de Haute Provence with a dispersion of 80Ä,mm(-1) with the aim of studying stellar and galactic dynamics.Radial velocities have been measured by correlation with templates ofthe same spectral class. The mean obtained precision is 3.0 km s(-1)with three observations. A new MK spectral classification is estimatedfor all stars. | Delta a and Stroemgren photometry of stars in the Renson-catalogue of AP and AM stars We have observed 131 stars of \cite[Renson's (1991)]{re91} catalogue ofAp and Am stars both in the Stroemgren & Maitzen's (1976) Delta asystem as a contribution to the photometric studies of the lambda 5200broad band flux depression feature in chemically peculiar stars. Withfew exceptions the probability grouping of Renson for membership in theCP2 group of peculiar stars is nicely reflected by peculiar values ofDelta a. Comparison with already available Delta a values yieldsslightly larger values due to a minor shift in the filter g_1 samplingthe depression. As found by \cite[Maitzen & Vogt (1983)]{ma83} theGeneva system peculiarity parameters correlate well with Delta a. Thisstudy demonstrates the advantageous performance of a photoelectricphotometer with a rapidly rotating filter wheel moving in a stop and gomode. | Three known and twenty-two new variable stars of early spectral type Photoelectric photometry is reported of three known and 22 newvariables, all brighter than V = 7.5 mag. The three known ones are: theellipsoidal variable 42 (V467) Per, the Beta Cep-type star HR 6684 =V2052 Oph, and the eclipsing variable HR 8854 = V649 Cas. The newvariable stars are listed. They include two Beta Cep candidates, oneeclipsing and three ellipsoidal variables, a 'mid-B' variable, anAlpha(2) CVn variable, and two Lambda Eri stars. The twelve remainingnew variables could not be classified because of insufficient data. TheLambda Eri variables found in the present investigation, together withsome examples from the literature, indicate that rotational modulationoccurs not only in Be, but also in normal B stars.
| An investigation of the spectroscopic-visual triple system 20 Leonis Stromgren uvby photometry of the spectroscopic-visual triple system 20Leonis was obtained at Mount Laguna Observatory of San Diego StateUniversity. The delta Scuti visual component was found to have only oneperiod of 0.0826 day, although another may be present in the data. Thespectroscopic binary component was found to undergo grazing eclipsesfrom which an inclination of 75 +/- 1 deg was tentatively determined.Radial velocities obtained from the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory1.2-m telescope were combined with Fekel and Bopp's 1977 velocities, andnew orbital elements were calculated. Spectroscopic observations of thevisual component also showed that there has been an observable change inthe system since 1977. The possibility that this system may be anellipsoidal variable rather than an eclipsing binary was alsoinvestigated.
| Fifth fundamental catalogue. Part 2: The FK5 extension - new fundamental stars The mean positions and proper motions for 3117 new fundamental starsessentially in the magnitude range about 4.5 to 9.5 are given in thisFK5 extension. Mean apparent visual magnitude is 7.2 and is on average2.5 magnitudes fainter then the basic FK5 which has a mean magnitude of4.7. (The basic FK5 gives the mean positions and proper motions for theclassical 1535 fundamental stars). The following are discussed: theobservational material, reduction of observations, star selection, andthe system for the FK5 extension. An explanation and description of thecatalog are given. The catalog of 3117 fundamental stars for the equinoxand epoch J2000.0 and B1950.0 is presented. The parallaxes and radialvelocities for 22 extension stars with large forecasting effects aregiven. Catalogs used in the compilation of the FK5 fundamental catalogare listed.
| UBV photometry of stars whose positions are accurately known. Photometric indices V, B-V, and U-B were measured for about 560 stars ofthe AGK3R and NPZT catalogs between BD declinations 11 deg and 23 deg,using the 40-cm Cassegrain telescope of the Kvistaberg Observatory fromApril 1986 to May 1987. The observation procedure and the reductiontechnique were the same as in the earlier papers of this series by Oja(1984, 1985, 1986, and 1987). The mean errors were calculated from theinternal consistency of the data. The accuracy was found to be the sameas for the earlier parts of the survey.
| Radial velocity measurements. I - Ground-based observations of the program stars for the HIPPARCOS satellite The radial velocities of 272 stars brighter than m(pg) = 8.5 aredetermined by digital microphotometric measurement of plates obtainedwith dispersion 80 A/mm using the Marly slit spectrograph on the 120-cmtelescope of the Observatoire de Haute Provence. The objects wereselected as probable members of the input catalog for the ESA Hipparcosastrometric satellite. The measurement techniques and data-reductionprocedures are described in detail, and the results are presented inextensive tables and graphs and briefly characterized.
| Lists of photometric AM candidates The Geneva photometric m parameter (Nicolet and Cramer, 1982) is used inorder to select Am photometric candidates from the Rufener (1981)catalogue. Two lists are given, the first containing field stars and thesecond cluster stars. According to the photometric criteria thediffusion process probably responsible for the Am phenomenon takes placerather quickly as Am candidates are present in young clusters. It isconfirmed that the phenomenon is enhanced by low rotational velocity andhigh metallicity. The age seems to slightly affect the Am phenomenon.
