GPM1 - a catalog of absolute proper motions of stars with respect to galaxies The description of the first version of the General Compiled Catalogueof Absolute Proper Motions (GPM1) for a sample of HIPPARCOS stars, derived with respect to galaxies within the plan called Catalogue ofFaint Stars (KSZ, Deutch 1952), is presented. The principal aim of theGPM1 construction was to provide absolute proper motions of stars todetermine the rotation of the HIPPARCOS system. The GPM1 cataloguecontains 977 HIPPARCOS Input Catalogue stars with V magnitudes $5^m -11^m in 180 fields north of -25 degrees of declination. The accuracy ofthe proper motions is 8 mas/yr (milliarcseconds per year). Comparison ofproper motions of GPM1 with those of the PPM and ACRS was performed andanalyzed with respect to systematic errors caused by spurious rotationof the FK5 system. The standard errors show that the rotation may bedetermined with an accuracy better than 1 mas/yr. Catalog is onlyavailable in electronic form at the CDS via anonymous ftpcdsarc.u-strasbg.fr or ftp 130.79.128.5.

The Tokyo PMC catalog 90-93: Catalog of positions of 6649 stars observed in 1990 through 1993 with Tokyo photoelectric meridian circle The sixth annual catalog of the Tokyo Photoelectric Meridian Circle(PMC) is presented for 6649 stars which were observed at least two timesin January 1990 through March 1993. The mean positions of the starsobserved are given in the catalog at the corresponding mean epochs ofobservations of individual stars. The coordinates of the catalog arebased on the FK5 system, and referred to the equinox and equator ofJ2000.0. The mean local deviations of the observed positions from theFK5 catalog positions are constructed for the basic FK5 stars to comparewith those of the Tokyo PMC Catalog 89 and preliminary Hipparcos resultsof H30.

Photometric survey near the main Galactic meridian: 2.1. Finding charts and photoelectric U,B,V,R stellar magnitudes in 25 fields Finding charts and photoelectric U,B,V,R magnitudes of stars in 25fields in the Main Galactic Meridian (programme MEGA) are presented. This part of the photometric survey includes fields near the NorthGalactic pole and fields at southern Galactic latitudes. Together withthe finding charts of 2.5(deg) x2.5(deg) the equatorial coordinates ofthe stars are given for epoch and equinox 1950.

Limits on the short-timescale near-infrared variability of Seyfert 1 nuclei We present new time-resolved photometric observations and images at 2.2microns of a small sample of X-ray variable Seyfert 1 nuclei. Aftercorrecting for dilution by the host galaxy in the observing aperture, wecompare the fractional variation, over the timescales of theobservations, in the near-infrared (NIR) to that expected in the X rays.We have not detected with confidence any NIR variability on timescalesshort enough to be incompatible with the dust reradiation scenario. Thegalaxy-corrected upper limits which we have obtained for variations onshort timescales, typical of non-thermal processes, imply that the NIRemission is dominated by a slowly varying, presumably reprocessed, component which accounts for no less than 80%-90% of the total.

Red horizontal-branch stars in the galactic disk A quantitative, three-dimensional spectral classification systemdeveloped by Rose (1984), which uses 2.5-A resolution spectra in theblue, has been used to identify a class of red horizontal branch (RHB)stars in the Galactic disk that are similar to those in the 'metal rich'globular cluster M 71. The RHB are denoted as evolved stars by their SrII 4077 line, and are distinguished from post-main sequence starsevolving through the same region of the HR diagram on the basis of theunique appearance of their CN 3883 and 4216 A bands. The RHB starsconsitute at least 5 percent of the entire giant branch population ofthe disk.

Narrow-band photometry of G and K stars near the North Galactic Pole Photoelectric narrow-band photometry obtained for 292 late-type starsbrighter than 10 m in the North Galactic Pole area is discussed. The g,n, k, m, f-system of Dickow et al. (1970) is used. The stars were chosenfrom two lists: (1) all stars of spectral type G5 or later in the HenryDraper Catalog (Cannon and Pickering, 1918-1924) within 15 deg of theNorth Galactic Pole, together with a few BD stars; and (2) all starsclassified as K or M giants and in Upgren's 25-31 deg zones (Upgren,1962). For most of the stars, estimates of the following quantities arederived: V-magnitude, R-I color, metal abundance, MV, and theduplicity parameter res(k).

A kinematic and abundance survey at the galactic poles The DDO intermediate band system is used to obtain detailed informationabout abundance gradients and velocity dispersions in the galaxy, withan emphasis on the properties of halo stars in the range of from 1 to 5kpc. The DDO abundance index is calibrated agianst (Fe/H) for metal-poorstars, with a resulting gradient of about -0.2 per kpc. However, whenthe sample is divided into two subsamples with (Fe/H) less than -0.5 andequal to or greater than -0.5, the gradients are -0.14 and 0.00,respectively. DDO observations of about 1000 stars, mostly G5-K5 giants, show that the velocity dispersion increases both with decrease inmetallicity and increase in z distance. The abundances found for high-zstars are similar to the A-star results of Rodgers (1971) in that abouthalf the K giants above 1 kpc appear to have solar abundances.

Meridian observations made in Brorfelde (Copenhagen University Observatory) 1975-76. This catalogue presents positions for selected faint stars mainly fromAGK3 observed with the 7" transit circle at Brorfelde. The stars aredistributed in 43 selected areas around radio sources and are suitableas reference stars for measuring the optical counterparts to the radiosources. The obscr 'itioi cre carried out from 1975.16 to 1976.04, andevery star was observed at least two times giving a m.s.e. of "13 forthe catalogue positions given in the FK4 system. These positions usedtogether with AGK3 proper motions will in the period 1975 to 1980 have am.s.e. at the epoch ranging from `:13 to `:15, which is less than halfof what is expected when using AGK3 positions. Key words: transit circle- catalogue of positions
