Accretion of chemically fractionated material on a wide binary with a blue straggler Context: .The components of the wide binary HIP 64030 = HD 113984 show alarge (about 0.25 dex) iron content difference (Desidera et al. 2006).The positions of the components on the color magnitude diagram suggestthat the primary is a blue straggler. Aims: .We studied theabundance difference of several elements besides iron, and we searchedfor stellar and substellar companions around the components to unveilthe origin of the observed iron difference. Methods: .Aline-by-line differential abundance analysis for several elements wasperformed for iron, while suitable spectral synthesis was performed forC, N, and Li. High precision radial velocities obtained with the iodinecell were combined with available literature data. Results: .Theanalysis of additional elements shows that the abundance difference forthe elements studied increases with increasing condensation temperature, suggesting that accretion of chemically fractionated material might haveoccurred in the system. Alteration of C and N likely due to CNOprocessing is also observed. We also show that the primary is aspectroscopic binary with a period of 445 days and moderateeccentricity. The minimum mass of the companion is0.17~Mȯ. Conclusions: .Two scenarios were exploredto explain the observed abundance pattern. In the first, all abundanceanomalies arise on the blue straggler. If this is the case, the dust-gasseparation may have been occurred in a circumbinary disk around the bluestraggler and its expected white dwarf companion, as observed in severalRV Tauri and post AGB binaries. In the second scenario, accretion ofdust-rich material occurred on the secondary. This would also explainthe anomalous carbon isotopic ratio of the secondary. Such a scenariorequires that a substantial amount of mass lost by the central binaryhas been accreted by the wide component. Further studies to compare thetwo scenarios are proposed.Based on observations collected at the EuropeanSouthern Observatory, Chile, using FEROS spectrograph(proposal ID: 70.D-0081), on observations made with the ItalianTelescopio Nazionale Galileo(TNG) operated on the island of La Palma by the Fundacion GalileoGalilei of the INAF(Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica) at the Spanish Observatorio delRoque de los Muchachosof the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias, and on observations made atMcDonald Observatory.
| Abundance difference between components of wide binaries. II. The southern sample Aims.We present high-precision iron abundance differences for 33 widebinaries with similar components. They were observed with the FEROSspectrograph at ESO, looking for abundance anomalies due to theingestion of metal rich material of a planetary origin. Methods:.An optimized data analysis technique and the high quality of thespectra allowed us to achieve an error of about 0.02 dex for pairs withsmall temperaure differences. Results: . We found one case (HIP64030 = HD 113984) with a large (0.27 dex) abundance difference. Theprimary of this binary appears to be a blue straggler, and the abundancedifference might be due to the peculiar evolution of the star. A fewother pairs show small abundance differences (≤0.09 dex). In a fewcases these differences suggest the ingestion of a small amount of metalrich material, but in others they are likely spurious, because of thelarge temperature difference, high level of magnetic activity, ordifferent evolutionary phases between the components. Some cases ofabundance differences involving pairs with warm (Teff ≥6000 K) primaries might be due to the diffusion of heavy elements;dedicated theoretical models for the stellar parameters of the targetswould be welcome. Conclusions: . This study confirms ourpreliminary result based on analysis of 23 pairs (Desidera et al. 2004)that the occurrence of large alterations in stellar abundances caused bythe ingestion of metal rich, rocky material is not a common event. Forat least 65% of the pairs with components warmer than 5500 K, the limitson the amount of rocky material accreted by the program stars arecomparable to the estimates of rocky material accreted by the Sun duringits main-sequence lifetime.
| Spectroscopic characterization of a sample of southern visual binaries Aims.We present the spectroscopic characterization of 56 pairs of visualbinaries with similar components, based on high resolution spectraacquired with FEROS at ESO La Silla. Methods: .For all stars, wemeasured radial and rotational velocities and CaII H&K emission. Results: .Five previously unknown double lined spectroscopic binarieswere found. Six other pairs show velocity differences that are notcompatible with the orbital motion of the wide pair, indicating thepresence of further companion(s) in the system. The fraction of visualbinaries that contain additional spectroscopic components is27±10%, compatible with other literature estimates. The ages ofthe components of the pairs derived from chromospheric activitytypically show apparent differences of about 0.2 dex. A few pairs show arather large difference in activity level, but in most cases this isconsistent with the variability of chromospheric emission observed forthe Sun along its magnetic cycle.
| The Geneva-Copenhagen survey of the Solar neighbourhood. Ages, metallicities, and kinematic properties of 14 000 F and G dwarfs We present and discuss new determinations of metallicity, rotation, age, kinematics, and Galactic orbits for a complete, magnitude-limited, andkinematically unbiased sample of 16 682 nearby F and G dwarf stars. Our63 000 new, accurate radial-velocity observations for nearly 13 500stars allow identification of most of the binary stars in the sampleand, together with published uvbyβ photometry, Hipparcosparallaxes, Tycho-2 proper motions, and a few earlier radial velocities, complete the kinematic information for 14 139 stars. These high-qualityvelocity data are supplemented by effective temperatures andmetallicities newly derived from recent and/or revised calibrations. Theremaining stars either lack Hipparcos data or have fast rotation. Amajor effort has been devoted to the determination of new isochrone agesfor all stars for which this is possible. Particular attention has beengiven to a realistic treatment of statistical biases and errorestimates, as standard techniques tend to underestimate these effectsand introduce spurious features in the age distributions. Our ages agreewell with those by Edvardsson et al. (\cite{edv93}), despite severalastrophysical and computational improvements since then. We demonstrate, however, how strong observational and theoretical biases cause thedistribution of the observed ages to be very different from that of thetrue age distribution of the sample. Among the many basic relations ofthe Galactic disk that can be reinvestigated from the data presentedhere, we revisit the metallicity distribution of the G dwarfs and theage-metallicity, age-velocity, and metallicity-velocity relations of theSolar neighbourhood. Our first results confirm the lack of metal-poor Gdwarfs relative to closed-box model predictions (the ``G dwarfproblem''), the existence of radial metallicity gradients in the disk, the small change in mean metallicity of the thin disk since itsformation and the substantial scatter in metallicity at all ages, andthe continuing kinematic heating of the thin disk with an efficiencyconsistent with that expected for a combination of spiral arms and giantmolecular clouds. Distinct features in the distribution of the Vcomponent of the space motion are extended in age and metallicity, corresponding to the effects of stochastic spiral waves rather thanclassical moving groups, and may complicate the identification ofthick-disk stars from kinematic criteria. More advanced analyses of thisrich material will require careful simulations of the selection criteriafor the sample and the distribution of observational errors.Based on observations made with the Danish 1.5-m telescope at ESO, LaSilla, Chile, and with the Swiss 1-m telescope at Observatoire deHaute-Provence, France.Complete Tables 1 and 2 are only available in electronic form at the CDSvia anonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/418/989

| Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue. We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

| A preliminary compilation of DS-programme star positions A catalog is presented of the double-star-program (DS-program) starpositions, listing right ascensions for 930 DSs and declinations for1225 DSs of the program. The positions were compiled from the observedvalues obtained between 1980 and 1987 with the meridian circles of sixUSSR observatories (the Moscow, Kazan', Kiev, Khar'kov, Odessa, andTashkent Observatories) and the Belgrade Observatory. The measurementsand the treatment of the observational material were performed using therelative method, and the FK-4 system stars were used as reference stars.
| Radial velocities of bright southern stars. V - 146 Population II F stars and related stars This paper presents new radial velocity determinations, based on 20 A/mmcoude plates, for 146 southern stars brighter than m(v) = 8.3. Drawnfrom the catalog of uvby-beta photometry of southern A5-G0 stars byOlsen (1983), the program stars are certain or suspected Population IIstars. One triple-lined and 10 double-lined binaries have been detected, including HD 210737, for which a preliminary orbit has been derived.Notes on spectral peculiarities are given.
| Photographic measures of visual binaries A fourth series of photographic measures of selected visual binaries hasbeen obtained with the astrometric reflector of the AstronomicalObservatory of Torino. This series contains 143 accurate measures of theastrometric parameters rho and theta which are the result of a criticalselection among the observations. Those having deviations from the meanrho larger than 3 sigma = 0.08 arcsec were rejected. The date ofobservation, angular separation, position angle, and number of exposuresper plate are given.
