The ROSAT all-sky survey catalogue of optically bright late-type giants and supergiants We present X-ray data for all late-type (A, F, G, K, M) giants andsupergiants (luminosity classes I to III-IV) listed in the Bright StarCatalogue that have been detected in the ROSAT all-sky survey.Altogether, our catalogue contains 450 entries of X-ray emitting evolvedlate-type stars, which corresponds to an average detection rate of about11.7 percent. The selection of the sample stars, the data analysis, thecriteria for an accepted match between star and X-ray source, and thedetermination of X-ray fluxes are described. Catalogue only available atCDS via anonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html

Evolved GK stars near the sun. I - The old disk population A sample of nearly two thousand GK giants with intermediate band, (R,I),DDO and Geneva photometry has been assembled. Astrometric data is alsoavailable for most of the stars. The some 800 members of the old diskpopulation in the sample yield accurate luminosities (from two sources),reddening values and chemical abundances from calibrations of thephotometric parameters. Less than one percent of the objects arepeculiar in the sense that the flux distribution is abnormal. Thepeculiarity is signaled by strong CH (and Ba II) and weak CH. The CH+stars are all spectroscopic binaries, probably with white dwarfcompanions, whereas the CH- stars are not. A broad absorption band, centered near 3500 A, is found in the CH+ stars whereas the CH- objectshave a broad emission feature in the same region. The intensity of theseabsorptions and emissions are independent of the intensity of abnormalspectral features. Ten percent of the old disk sample have a heavyelement abundance from one and a half to three times the solar value. The distribution of the heavy element abundances is nearly a normal onewith a peak near solar abundance and ranges three times to one sixthsolar. The distribution of the (U, V) velocities is independent of theheavy element abundance and does not appear to be random. Ten percent ofthe old disk stars show a CN anomaly, equally divided between CN strongand CN weak. Several stars of individual astrometric or astrophysicalimportance are isolated.

The distance and structure of the Coalsack. I - Photometric data The results of UBV and H-beta photometry for 284 stars of spectral typesB to F located in the area of the dark cloud Coalsack are presented. Most of the present stars are brighter than 10.0 mag and are classifiedin the MK system of Houk and Cowley (1975). For each star, the bestvalues for the extinction and distance modulus are provided, withtypical estimated errors of + or - 0.08 mag for the extinction and + or- 0.32 mag for the distance modulus. Possible misclassifications andspectral peculiarities are noted for several of the stars.

Secondary standards for the Stromgren UVBY system Observations of 158 E region stars have been made in the Stromgrensystem, using the 46-cm reflector at Cape Town. They are mostly brighterthan eighth magnitude and are intended for use as secondary standardsfor the four-color system. The E region relative zero points are definedwith a precision of + or - 0.001 mag, and the internal standard errorsof the colors life between + or - 0.001 and + or - 0.002 mag.

Close visual binaries. I - MK classifications Each component of 170 close visual binaries has been classified with newprocedures for controlling contamination problems. These classificationsare presented and are shown to be on the MK system. Two sources of areascanner UBV photometry were compared in order to establish homogeneousphotometric as well as spectroscopic data. From a consideration ofsystematic errors in the V magnitude difference (Delta V) betweencomponents the photometry of Hurly and Warner (1983) is to be preferred.Absolute magnitudes for each binary are derived from Delta V via atested MK - M(v) map.

Close visual binaries. III - Parameters and evolutionary status New Yale isochrones, which have been tested for accuracy by Corbally(1984), provide the means to investigate interesting visual binaries, especially those whose classifications and photometry do not match well.Various parameters are deduced for those binaries which fitted theisochrones (e.g. ages, metal abundances, luminosities of peculiarstars); various solutions are systematically developed for those whichdid not fit; and a likely status of evolution is proposed (e.g.,duplicity of the components, premain-sequence, blue straggler, horizontal branch, optical pair, data inaccuracies). Evolution aroundthe helium flash and diffusion theory are briefly considered. Theseparameters and statuses provide a wealth of new stellar data andsuggestions for further investigation.

UBV photometry of E region standard stars of intermediate brightness Photometry data are given for 335 stars in the nine E regions.Observations were made using a photometer and filters on the 47 cmreflector at Cape Town. The stellar dispersions are summarized. Data arepresented in tabular form.

Area scanner observations of close visual double stars. I - Technique A description is presented of the construction and performance of acomputer-controlled area scanner, and its ability to produce highquality one-dimensional intensity profiles of close visual double starsis demonstrated. An innovative feature of the technique is the use ofon-line cross-correlation to remove the smearing effects of imagemotions. Good fits to Franz's analytical stellar intensity profiles areobtained, which then provide differential magnitudes and, in some cases, linear separations. The possibility of obtaining individual magnitudesof the components of systems with separations considerably less than 1arcsec is illustrated.

Atmospheric extinction in the /U-B/ color index Various methods for obtaining the atmospheric extinction in the (U-B)color index taking into account the dependence of extinction coefficienton the intrinsic color index of the star are examined. Numericalintegrations are performed to determine synthetic color indices for 32stars of spectral classes O9 to M0 and luminosity classes I, III and Vthrough 0, 1 and 2 air masses, resulting in three (u-b) color indicesfor each star. Photometric reduction of the color indices to the (U-B)color index was then performed by the classical method, by the methodproposed by Gutierrez-Moreno et al. (1966) and various modifications ofit, and by the method proposed by Moffat and Vogt (1977). Comparisonwith observations of 71 stars in the standard region E5, nine extinctionstandard stars and 25 Johnson standard stars in the UBV reveals that thereduction of (U-B) by the classical method gives internal errors betweentwo and three times larger than those obtained for (B-V) and V, whilethe methods of Gutierrez-Moreno et al. and Moffat and Vogt providegreatly improved accuracy.
