Evolution of interacting binaries with a B type primary at birth We revisited the analytical expression for the mass ratio distributionfor non-evolved binaries with a B type primary. Selection effectsgoverning the observations were taken into account in order to comparetheory with observations. Theory was optimized so as to fit best withthe observed q-distribution of SB1s and SB2s. The accuracy of thistheoretical mass ratio distribution function is severely hindered by theuncertainties on the observations. We present a library of evolutionarycomputations for binaries with a B type primary at birth. Some liberalcomputations including loss of mass and angular momentum during binaryevolution are added to an extensive grid of conservative calculations.Our computations are compared statistically to the observeddistributions of orbital periods and mass ratios of Algols. ConservativeRoche Lobe Over Flow (RLOF) reproduces the observed distribution oforbital periods but fails to explain the observed mass ratios in therange q in [0.4-1]. In order to obtain a better fit the binaries have tolose a significant amount of matter, without losing much angularmomentum.
| Data mining in the young open cluster IC2391 Large-scale astrometric and photometric data bases have been used tosearch for and confirm stellar membership of the open cluster IC2391.125 stars were found that satisfied criteria for membership based onproper motion components and BRI photometry from the United States NavalObservatory B (USNO-B) catalogue and JHK photometry from the Two MicronAll Sky Survey (2MASS) catalogue. This listing was compared with othersrecently published. A distance to the cluster of 147.7 +/- 5.5 pc wasfound with mean proper motion components, from the Tycho2 catalogue of(-25.04 +/- 1.53 masyr-1+23.19+/-1.23 masyr-1). Arevised Trumpler classification of II3r is suggested. Luminosity andmass functions for the candidate stars were constructed and comparedwith those of field stars and other clusters.
| 3D mapping of the dense interstellar gas around the Local Bubble We present intermediate results from a long-term program of mapping theneutral absorption characteristics of the local interstellar medium,motivated by the availability of accurate and consistent parallaxes fromthe Hipparcos satellite. Equivalent widths of the interstellar NaID-line doublet at 5890 Å are presented for the lines-of-sighttowards some 311 new target stars lying within ~ 350 pc of the Sun.Using these data, together with NaI absorption measurements towards afurther ~ 240 nearby targets published in the literature (for many ofthem, in the directions of molecular clouds), and the ~ 450lines-of-sight already presented by (Sfeir et al. \cite{sfeir99}), weshow 3D absorption maps of the local distribution of neutral gas towards1005 sight-lines with Hipparcos distances as viewed from a variety ofdifferent galactic projections.The data are synthesized by means of two complementary methods, (i) bymapping of iso-equivalent width contours, and (ii) by densitydistribution calculation from the inversion of column-densities, amethod devised by Vergely et al. (\cite{vergely01}). Our present dataconfirms the view that the local cavity is deficient in cold and neutralinterstellar gas. The closest dense and cold gas ``wall'', in the firstquadrant, is at ~ 55-60 pc. There are a few isolated clouds at closerdistance, if the detected absorption is not produced by circumstellarmaterial.The maps reveal narrow or wide ``interstellar tunnels'' which connectthe Local Bubble to surrounding cavities, as predicted by the model ofCox & Smith (1974). In particular, one of these tunnels, defined bystars at 300 to 600 pc from the Sun showing negligible sodiumabsorption, connects the well known CMa void (Gry et al. \cite{gry85}),which is part of the Local Bubble, with the supershell GSH 238+00+09(Heiles \cite{heiles98}). High latitude lines-of-sight with the smallestabsorption are found in two ``chimneys'', whose directions areperpendicular to the Gould belt plane. The maps show that the LocalBubble is ``squeezed'' by surrounding shells in a complicated patternand suggest that its pressure is smaller than in those expandingregions.We discuss the locations of several HI and molecular clouds. Usingcomparisons between NaI and HI or CO velocities, in some cases we areable to improve the constraints on their distances. According to thevelocity criteria, MBM 33-37, MBM 16-18, UT 3-7, and MBM 54-55 arecloser than ~ 100 pc, and MBM 40 is closer than 80 pc. Dense HI cloudsare seen at less than 90 pc and 85 pc in the directions of the MBM 12and MBM 41-43 clouds respectively, but the molecular clouds themselvesmay be far beyond. The above closest molecular clouds are located at theneutral boundary of the Bubble. | Seven-Color Photoelectric Photometry of the Omicron Velorum Cluster Photoelectric observations in the Vilnius seven-color photometric systemof 36 stars in the magnitude range 3.6 < V < 10.7 in the opencluster around the star o Velorum are presented. Photometric spectraland luminosity classes are determined for each star from which the meandistance modulus of the cluster is found to be 5.94+/-0.02 mag and themean color excess EY-V = 0.00+/-0.02 mag. The membership ofthe cluster stars is discussed.
| Catalogue of Apparent Diameters and Absolute Radii of Stars (CADARS) - Third edition - Comments and statistics The Catalogue, available at the Centre de Données Stellaires deStrasbourg, consists of 13 573 records concerning the results obtainedfrom different methods for 7778 stars, reported in the literature. Thefollowing data are listed for each star: identifications, apparentmagnitude, spectral type, apparent diameter in arcsec, absolute radiusin solar units, method of determination, reference, remarks. Commentsand statistics obtained from CADARS are given. | The Local Interstellar Medium in Puppis-Vela The first study of the local interstellar medium (LISM) towardPuppis-Vela (l=245deg to 275°, b=-15deg to+5°, d<200 pc) is presented in this paper. A study of thelocations, sizes, and physical characteristics of local interstellargas, i.e.``astronephography,'' is included, and relies upon the improveddistance measurements provided by Hipparcos parallax measurements. Allspectra of more distant sight lines contain absorption features due tointervening local gas, and more distant structures can only be studiedaccurately if components due to the LISM have been isolated. Towardsthis end, high-resolution (R~95,000), high signal-to-noise (S/N ~ 110 to250) Na I λλ5889.951, 5895.924 spectra of 11 nearby starsin the direction of Puppis-Vela have been obtained with the CoudéEchelle Spectrograph on the 1.4 m Coudé Auxiliary Telescope atthe European Southern Observatory. Toward Puppis-Vela, absorption due tothe Local Interstellar Cloud (LIC) was not observed, but components atthree distinct velocities were found, and the extent of the local gasproducing the features was estimated. The three components have thefollowing locations and velocities: component A-(l~276° to 298°,b~-5degto +4°), Vhelio=+6 to +9 kms-1, and d~104 pc; component B-(l~264deg to276°, b~-7deg to +3°), Vhelio=+12 to +15km s-1, and d~115 pc; component C-(l~252deg to271°, b~-8deg to -6°), Vhelio=+21 to +23km s-1, and d~131 pc. The conclusions regarding theultraviolet spectrum of γ2 Vel (l=263deg,b=-8deg, d=258+/-35 pc) presented by Fitzpatrick &Spitzer were reexamined in light of this new LISM data, and theambiguity in their conclusions about several absorption components isresolved. The stars in Puppis-Vela flank the region of the apparentextension of the Local Bubble (or Cavity) known as the β CMatunnel, and measurements of the Na I column density towards the samplestars have been used to modify existing estimates of the extent of thetunnel. A compilation of all existing Na I observations of less than 200pc sight lines around the tunnel reveal that low column densities havebeen exclusively detected within l~210deg to 250°, andb~-21deg to -9°. | X-ray emission from Lindroos binary systems We present a study of the X-ray emission from binary systems extractedfrom the Lindroos catalogue (Lindroos 1986) based on the ROSAT All-Skysurvey as well as ROSAT PSPC and HRI pointings. The studied sampleconsists of visual binary systems comprised of early-type primaries andlate-type secondaries. The ages of the systems were determined byLindroos (1985) from uvbybeta photometry of the primaries. These agesrange between 33 and 135 Myr, so if the late-type secondaries arephysically bound to the early-type primaries, they could be Post-T Tauristars (PTTS). We have found strong X-ray emission from severalsecondaries. This fact together with their optical and IR data, makethem bona fide PTTS candidates. We have also detected X-ray emissionfrom several early-type primaries and, in particular, from most of thelate-B type stars. Because their HRI hardness ratios are similar tothose from resolved late-type stars, the presence of an unresolvedlate-type companion seems to be the cause of this emission.

| Open clusters with Hipparcos. I. Mean astrometric parameters New memberships, mean parallaxes and proper motions of all 9 openclusters closer than 300 pc (except the Hyades) and 9rich clusters between 300 and 500 pc have been computed using Hipparcosdata. Precisions, ranging from 0.2 to 0.5 mas for parallaxes and 0.1 to0.5 mas/yr for proper motions, are of great interest for calibratingphotometric parallaxes as well as for kinematical studies. Carefulinvestigations of possible biases have been performed and no evidence ofsignificant systematic errors on the mean cluster parallaxes has beenfound. The distances and proper motions of 32 more distant clusters,which may be used statistically, are also indicated. Based onobservations made with the ESA Hipparcos astrometry satellite
| A Deep X-Ray Image of IC 2391 A 56 ks soft X-ray image of the IC 2391 star cluster has been acquiredwith the ROSAT High Resolution Imager, resulting in the detection of 34sources above a 3 sigma detection level of L_X~=4x10^28 ergs s^-1. Wereport source coordinates and fluxes plus identifications and broadbandBVRI photometry for optical counterparts to each source. We comparethese results with X-ray source fluxes from a ROSAT PSPC image of thesame region, which we obtained 2 yr earlier. The largest change in X-raybrightness for any of the known or suspected G, K, and M cluster membersis 0.43 dex, i.e., a factor of ~3. Given this modest amplitude in X-rayvariability, we conclude that the broad (factor of 20) dispersion inX-ray luminosities within IC 2391 is unrelated to short- orintermediate-term cycles of the stellar dynamo. We further show that theeffects of source confusion on the PSPC X-ray luminosity function, fordistance scales of 5"-30", are relatively small and are thus negligiblefor the purpose of comparing IC 2391 with older clusters and forstudying the evolution of coronal X-ray emission in solar-type stars.The greater part of the observed scatter in X-ray luminosity within IC2391 still awaits explanation.
| MSC - a catalogue of physical multiple stars The MSC catalogue contains data on 612 physical multiple stars ofmultiplicity 3 to 7 which are hierarchical with few exceptions. Orbitalperiods, angular separations and mass ratios are estimated for eachsub-system. Orbital elements are given when available. The catalogue canbe accessed through CDS (Strasbourg). Half of the systems are within 100pc from the Sun. The comparison of the periods of close and widesub-systems reveals that there is no preferred period ratio and allpossible combinations of periods are found. The distribution of thelogarithms of short periods is bimodal, probably due to observationalselection. In 82\% of triple stars the close sub-system is related tothe primary of a wide pair. However, the analysis of mass ratiodistribution gives some support to the idea that component masses areindependently selected from the Salpeter mass function. Orbits of wideand close sub-systems are not always coplanar, although thecorresponding orbital angular momentum vectors do show a weak tendencyof alignment. Some observational programs based on the MSC aresuggested. | A Catalogue of Correlations Between Eclipsing Binaries and Other Categories of Double Stars Among the 9110 stars in The Bright Star Catalogue, there are 225eclipsing or ellipsoidal variables. A search has been made for these incatalogues of spectroscopic binaries, visual double or multiple stars,speckle interferometry, occulation binaries, and galatic clusters. Themajority of the photometric binaries are also members of groups ofhigher multiplicity. The variables are in systems ranging from one to 91stars, five on the average. 199 are either spectroscopic binaries (SB)or stars with variable radial velocity, with orbital periods known for160. Photometric periods are lacking for 48 while SB periods areavailable for 23 of these. Observers with photoelectric equipment areencouraged to plan observations to test if the SB periods are consistentwith photometric data. Observers are likewise encouraged to examinethose stars for which the photometric and SB periods appear to beinconsistent. Parallaxes are available for 86 of the stars, 41 of themindicating distances nearer than 50 parsecs.
| The Pulkovo Spectrophotometric Catalog of Bright Stars in the Range from 320 TO 1080 NM A spectrophotometric catalog is presented, combining results of numerousobservations made by Pulkovo astronomers at different observing sites.The catalog consists of three parts: the first contains the data for 602stars in the spectral range of 320--735 nm with a resolution of 5 nm,the second one contains 285 stars in the spectral range of 500--1080 nmwith a resolution of 10 nm and the third one contains 278 stars combinedfrom the preceding catalogs in the spectral range of 320--1080 nm with aresolution of 10 nm. The data are presented in absolute energy unitsW/m(2) m, with a step of 2.5 nm and with an accuracy not lower than1.5--2.0%.
| The ROSAT all-sky survey catalogue of optically bright OB-type stars. For the detailed statistical analysis of the X-ray emission of hot starswe selected all stars of spectral type O and B listed in the Yale BrightStar Catalogue and searched for them in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. Inthis paper we describe the selection and preparation of the data andpresent a compilation of the derived X-ray data for a complete sample ofbright OB stars.
| Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue. We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.
| The determination of T_eff_ of B, A and F main sequence stars from the continuum between 3200 A and 3600 A. A method of determination of the effective temperature of B, A and Fmain sequence stars is proposed, using the slope of the continuumbetween 3200A and 3600A. The effective temperature calibration is basedon a sample of stars with energy distributions known from UV to the red.We have determined the Balmer jump and the effective temperatures for235 main sequence stars. The temperatures found have been compared withthose derived by Underhill et al. (1979), Kontizas & Theodossiou(1980), Theodossiou (1985), Morossi & Malagnini (1985). Thecomparison showed good agreement for most of the stars in common. On theother hand, the temperatures derived from the reddening-free colourfactor QUV, from the colour index (m1965-V) and from (B-V), given inGulati et al. (1989), are systematically lower than our temperatures,however the differences are within one-sigma error.
| The Evolution of Stellar Coronae: Initial Results from a ROSAT PSPC Observation of IC 2391 Not Available
| Photometric and spectroscopic analysis of high Galactic latitude molecular clouds. I - Distances and extinctions of stars toward 25 selected regions The paper presents new photoelectric photometry in the UBV, uvby, andH-beta systems for 320 stars at high Galactic latitudes, selected fortheir proximity to the densest portions of a variety of high Galacticlatitude atomic and molecular clouds. Low-resolution digital spectra areemployed to classify 115 of the stars. Several novel techniques aredeveloped for automatic digital spectral classification, and fordereddening Stromgren uvby-beta and Johnson UBV,H-beta photometry. Anempirical determination of the errors in the derived dereddened colors,and techniques for converting between the two photometric systems arepresented on the basis of the analysis of a statistically significantsample of 1480 stars with complete data sets in both photometric systemsand with an accurate MK spectral type. New constraints on the distancesto several clouds are presented.
| The IC 2391 supercluster Sixty-three field stars and the sparse cluster IC 2391 have beenidentified as members of the IC 2391 supercluster. The members have atleast 95 percent of their space motion, directed toward (A,D) = (5.82h,- 12.44d). Like members of the very similar Pleiades supercluster, theIC 2391 supercluster contains objects of two ages: t = 8 x 19 exp 7 and2.5 x 10 exp 8 yr. A prototype very active chromosphere star and theenigmatic giant variable TZ For are supercluster members together withtwo A-type stars suspected of possessing particulate disks. Anespecially interesting member is the system of Xi Cep (HR 8417) in whichthe two brightest components are greatly undermassive.

| Radial velocities in the open cluster IC 2391 Radial velocities have been determined for 31 stars in the field of theopen cluster IC 2391, and the percentage of probable radial-velocityvariables is derived. The orbit of one previously known spectroscopicbinary is improved, and the existence of two double-line binaries isconfirmed. The membership to the cluster and the average cluster radialvelocity are discussed and the incidence of short-period binaries amongthe Main-Sequence members of IC 2391 is compared with the incidence forother clusters with similar average axial rotation of its members.
| Photoelectric search for CP2-stars in open clusters. VIII - IC 2391 and NGC 2451 Delta-a photometry for 90 stars in the areas of the rather young openclusters IC 2391 and NGC 2451, covering the whole spectral domain ofCP2-stars, is presented. Seven stars show up as photometricallypeculiar, but membership is probable only for 4, 2 for each cluster. NGC2451 may have to be divided into a near and a far cluster. IC 2391 isunreddened and presents itself as ideal reference for the normality linein the Delta-a photometry. Crawford's (1978) calibration yields absolutemagnitudes for the peculiar stars which result in distance moduli veryclose to the mean cluster modulus. Again it is possible to confront thediversity of spectral classifications with the photometric peculiarityindex Delta-a.
| A study of visual double stars with early-type primaries. V - Post-T Tauri secondaries In an ongoing study of companions of O and B type primaries, themajority of the secondaries are found to be of spectral type F, G, or K.Their properties are investigated in relation to their evolutionarystatus. The ages of the systems have been determined from uvby-betaphotometry of the primaries and it is found that all are younger than150 million years and half are less than 30 million years old.Thirty-seven secondaries have ages less than the expected contractiontime to the zero-age-main sequence (ZAMS). More than 50 percent of theF, G, and K secondaries exhibit spectroscopic features (Ca II H, K andH-alpha emission and strong Li absorption) typical of young stars andreminiscent of T Tauri stars although not as conspicuous. It isappropriate to classify them as post-T Tauri stars. The lifetime of somefeatures characteristic of early stellar evolution is discussed.
| A catalog of ultraviolet interstellar extinction excesses for 1415 stars Ultraviolet interstellar extinction excesses are presented for 1415stars with spectral types B7 and earlier. The excesses with respect to Vare derived from Astronomical Netherlands Satellite (ANS) 5-channel UVphotometry at central wavelengths of approximately 1550, 1800, 2500, and3300 A. A measure of the excess extinction in the 2200-A extinction bumpis also given. The data are valuable for investigating the systematicsof peculiar interstellar extinction and for studying the character of UVinterstellar extinction in the general direction of stars for which theextinction-curve shape is unknown.
| The ellipsoidal variable stars An annotated bibliography is presented for the ellipsoidal variableclass of noneclipsing close binaries, and a method is furnished for theanalysis of the light curves and spectroscopic data to determine thephysical parameters of such systems. Attention is given to confirmedellipsoidal variables, as well as suspected and rejected ones, and tothe characteristics of theoretical ellipsoidal light curves.
| Observed and computed spectral flux distribution of non-supergiant O9-G8 stars. III - Determination of T(eff) for the stars in the Breger Catalogue The effective temperatures and angular diameters of nonsupergiant O9-G8stars are determined from visible spectrophotometry. The results, whichrefer to 302 stars included in the Breger Catalogue, are derived fromthe comparison between the observed flux distributions and thepredictions of Kurucz's models (1979). The uncertainties to be expectedin individual results are discussed; their sizes are of the order of 5percent in effective temperature and 10 percent in angular diameter.
| A study of visual double stars with early type primaries. IV Astrophysical data Astrophysical parameters (MK class, color excess, absolute magnitude,distance, effective temperature, mass, and age) are derived fromcalibrations of the uvby-beta indices for the members of 253 doublestars with O or B type primaries and faint secondaries. The photometricspectral classification is compared to the MK classes, and the agreementis very good. The derived data together with spectroscopic and JHKL dataare used for deciding which pairs are likely to be physical and whichare optical, and it is shown that 98 (34 percent) of the secondaries arelikely to be members of physical systems. For 90 percent of the physicalpairs the projected separation between the components is less than25,000 AU. A majority of the physical secondaries are late-type stars,and 50 percent of them are contracting towards the zero-agemain-sequence. Also presented are new uvby-beta data for 43 secondariesand a computer program for determining astrophysical parameters fromuvby-beta data.
| The local system of early type stars - Spatial extent and kinematics Published uvby and H-beta photometric data and proper motions arecompiled and analyzed to characterize the structure and kinematics ofthe bright early-type O-A0 stars in the solar vicinity, with a focus onthe Gould belt. The selection and calibration techniques are explained,and the data are presented in extensive tables and graphs and discussedin detail. The Gould belt stars of age less than 20 Myr are shown togive belt inclination 19 deg to the Galactic plane and node-lineorientation in the direction of Galactic rotation, while the symmetricaldistribution about the Galactic plane and kinematic properties (purecircular differential rotation) of the belt stars over 60 Myr oldresemble those of fainter nonbelt stars of all ages. The unresolveddiscrepancy between the expansion observed in the youngest nearby starsand the predictions of simple models of expansion from a point isattributed to the inhomogeneous distribution of interstellar matter.
| Axial rotational velocities in the open cluster IC 2391 Projected rotational velocities have been determined for the members ofthe open cluster IC 2391. The results are discussed in the context ofthe statistical relation between axial rotation and percentage ofbinaries found by Abt (1962) for open clusters and associations.
| Spectral morphology in the open cluster IC 2391 Thirty-one stars brighter than B = 10 in the field of the open clusterIC 2391 are classified on the basis of the mean and MK dispersion. Byusing only normal stars of the main sequence and the absolute visualmagnitudes taken from the calibration made by Garrison (1978), adistance modulus of 5.9 + or - 0.07 (p.e.) magnitudes has been obtainedwhich corresponds to a distance of about 150 pc. A new Am star has beendiscovered, and the presence of two more, discovered earlier, has beenconfirmed. The spectra of the Silicon star HD 74535 and of a Si-Cr-Srobject are characterized.
