Reliability Checks on the Indo-US Stellar Spectral Library Using Artificial Neural Networks and Principal Component Analysis The Indo-US coudé feed stellar spectral library (CFLIB) madeavailable to the astronomical community recently by Valdes et al. (2004,ApJS, 152, 251) contains spectra of 1273 stars in the spectral region3460 to 9464Å at a high resolution of 1Å (FWHM) and a widerange of spectral types. Cross-checking the reliability of this databaseis an important and desirable exercise since a number of stars in thisdatabase have no known spectral types and a considerable fraction ofstars has not so complete coverage in the full wavelength region of3460-9464Å resulting in gaps ranging from a few Å to severaltens of Å. We use an automated classification scheme based onArtificial Neural Networks (ANN) to classify all 1273 stars in thedatabase. In addition, principal component analysis (PCA) is carried outto reduce the dimensionality of the data set before the spectra areclassified by the ANN. Most importantly, we have successfullydemonstrated employment of a variation of the PCA technique to restorethe missing data in a sample of 300 stars out of the CFLIB.

Local kinematics of K and M giants from CORAVEL/Hipparcos/Tycho-2 data. Revisiting the concept of superclusters The availability of the Hipparcos Catalogue has triggered many kinematicand dynamical studies of the solar neighbourhood. Nevertheless, thosestudies generally lacked the third component of the space velocities,i.e., the radial velocities. This work presents the kinematic analysisof 5952 K and 739 M giants in the solar neighbourhood which includes forthe first time radial velocity data from a large survey performed withthe CORAVEL spectrovelocimeter. It also uses proper motions from theTycho-2 catalogue, which are expected to be more accurate than theHipparcos ones. An important by-product of this study is the observedfraction of only 5.7% of spectroscopic binaries among M giants ascompared to 13.7% for K giants. After excluding the binaries for whichno center-of-mass velocity could be estimated, 5311 K and 719 M giantsremain in the final sample. The UV-plane constructed from these datafor the stars with precise parallaxes (σπ/π≤20%) reveals a rich small-scale structure, with several clumpscorresponding to the Hercules stream, the Sirius moving group, and theHyades and Pleiades superclusters. A maximum-likelihood method, based ona Bayesian approach, has been applied to the data, in order to make fulluse of all the available stars (not only those with precise parallaxes)and to derive the kinematic properties of these subgroups. Isochrones inthe Hertzsprung-Russell diagram reveal a very wide range of ages forstars belonging to these groups. These groups are most probably relatedto the dynamical perturbation by transient spiral waves (as recentlymodelled by De Simone et al. \cite{Simone2004}) rather than to clusterremnants. A possible explanation for the presence of younggroup/clusters in the same area of the UV-plane is that they have beenput there by the spiral wave associated with their formation, while thekinematics of the older stars of our sample has also been disturbed bythe same wave. The emerging picture is thus one of dynamical streamspervading the solar neighbourhood and travelling in the Galaxy withsimilar space velocities. The term dynamical stream is more appropriatethan the traditional term supercluster since it involves stars ofdifferent ages, not born at the same place nor at the same time. Theposition of those streams in the UV-plane is responsible for the vertexdeviation of 16.2o ± 5.6o for the wholesample. Our study suggests that the vertex deviation for youngerpopulations could have the same dynamical origin. The underlyingvelocity ellipsoid, extracted by the maximum-likelihood method afterremoval of the streams, is not centered on the value commonly acceptedfor the radial antisolar motion: it is centered on < U > =-2.78±1.07 km s-1. However, the full data set(including the various streams) does yield the usual value for theradial solar motion, when properly accounting for the biases inherent tothis kind of analysis (namely, < U > = -10.25±0.15 kms-1). The Indo-US Library of Coudé Feed Stellar Spectra We have obtained spectra for 1273 stars using the 0.9 m coudéfeed telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. This telescope feedsthe coudé spectrograph of the 2.1 m telescope. The spectra havebeen obtained with the no. 5 camera of the coudé spectrograph anda Loral 3K×1K CCD. Two gratings have been used to provide spectralcoverage from 3460 to 9464 Å, at a resolution of ~1 Å FWHMand at an original dispersion of 0.44 Å pixel-1. For885 stars we have complete spectra over the entire 3460 to 9464 Åwavelength region (neglecting small gaps of less than 50 Å), andpartial spectral coverage for the remaining stars. The 1273 stars havebeen selected to provide broad coverage of the atmospheric parametersTeff, logg, and [Fe/H], as well as spectral type. The goal ofthe project is to provide a comprehensive library of stellar spectra foruse in the automated classification of stellar and galaxy spectra and ingalaxy population synthesis. In this paper we discuss thecharacteristics of the spectral library, viz., details of theobservations, data reduction procedures, and selection of stars. We alsopresent a few illustrations of the quality and information available inthe spectra. The first version of the complete spectral library is nowpublicly available from the National Optical Astronomy Observatory(NOAO) via ftp and http.

Catalogue of Apparent Diameters and Absolute Radii of Stars (CADARS) - Third edition - Comments and statistics The Catalogue, available at the Centre de Données Stellaires deStrasbourg, consists of 13 573 records concerning the results obtainedfrom different methods for 7778 stars, reported in the literature. Catalogs of temperatures and [Fe/H] averages for evolved G and K stars A catalog of mean values of [Fe/H] for evolved G and K stars isdescribed. The zero point for the catalog entries has been establishedby using differential analyses. Literature sources for those entries areincluded in the catalog. The mean values are given with rms errors andnumbers of degrees of freedom, and a simple example of the use of thesestatistical data is given. For a number of the stars with entries in thecatalog, temperatures have been determined. A separate catalogcontaining those data is briefly described. GPM - compiled catalogue of absolute proper motions of stars in selected areas of sky with galaxies. Not Available

GPM1 - a catalog of absolute proper motions of stars with respect to galaxies The description of the first version of the General Compiled Catalogueof Absolute Proper Motions (GPM1) for a sample of HIPPARCOS stars,derived with respect to galaxies within the plan called Catalogue ofFaint Stars (KSZ, Deutch 1952), is presented. The principal aim of theGPM1 construction was to provide absolute proper motions of stars todetermine the rotation of the HIPPARCOS system. The GPM1 cataloguecontains 977 HIPPARCOS Input Catalogue stars with V magnitudes $5^m -11^m in 180 fields north of -25 degrees of declination. The accuracy ofthe proper motions is 8 mas/yr (milliarcseconds per year). Comparison ofproper motions of GPM1 with those of the PPM and ACRS was performed andanalyzed with respect to systematic errors caused by spurious rotationof the FK5 system. The standard errors show that the rotation may bedetermined with an accuracy better than 1 mas/yr. Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue. We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

The integrated spectra of M32 and of 47 Tuc: A comparative study at high spectral resolution Integrated spectra have been obtained for the elliptical galaxy M32 andfor the 'metal-rich' Galactic globular cluster 47 Tuc. The spectra coverthe wavelength interval lambda lambda 3800-4400 A at a resolution of 2.5A full width at half maximum (FWHM) and S/N ratio of approximately100:1. Similar data have been acquired for a library of 191 individualstars, and, to support the 47 Tuc observations, integrated spectra offour additional metal-rich Galactic globular clusters have beenobtained. These observations are used to compare in detail theintegrated spectra of M32 (the most extensively studied ellipticalgalaxy) and 47 Tuc (the best-studied metal-rich Galactic globularcluster). Although M32 and 47 Tuc have similar optical broadband colorsand overall spectral types, when viewed at 2.5 A resolution spectranumerous subtle differences between their integrated are clearlyvisible. A system of 13 spectral indices, many of them originallydefined in Rose (1984), has been used to quantify these differences.Altogether twelve diagnostic diagrams are presented to illustrate themanner in which the integrated spectrum of M32 differs from that of 47Tuc. These diagrams are used to place several strong constraints on thestellar populations in these two systems.

Evolved GK stars near the sun. I - The old disk population A sample of nearly two thousand GK giants with intermediate band, (R,I),DDO and Geneva photometry has been assembled. Astrometric data is alsoavailable for most of the stars. The some 800 members of the old diskpopulation in the sample yield accurate luminosities (from two sources),reddening values and chemical abundances from calibrations of thephotometric parameters. Less than one percent of the objects arepeculiar in the sense that the flux distribution is abnormal. Thepeculiarity is signaled by strong CH (and Ba II) and weak CH. The CH+stars are all spectroscopic binaries, probably with white dwarfcompanions, whereas the CH- stars are not. A broad absorption band,centered near 3500 A, is found in the CH+ stars whereas the CH- objectshave a broad emission feature in the same region. The intensity of theseabsorptions and emissions are independent of the intensity of abnormalspectral features. Ten percent of the old disk sample have a heavyelement abundance from one and a half to three times the solar value.The distribution of the heavy element abundances is nearly a normal onewith a peak near solar abundance and ranges three times to one sixthsolar. The distribution of the (U, V) velocities is independent of theheavy element abundance and does not appear to be random. Ten percent ofthe old disk stars show a CN anomaly, equally divided between CN strongand CN weak. Several stars of individual astrometric or astrophysicalimportance are isolated.

A critical appraisal of published values of (Fe/H) for K II-IV stars 'Primary' (Fe/H) averages are presented for 373 evolved K stars ofluminosity classes II-IV and (Fe/H) values beween -0.9 and +0.21 dex.The data define a 'consensus' zero point with a precision of + or -0.018 dex and have rms errors per datum which are typically 0.08-0.16dex. The primary data base makes recalibration possible for the large(Fe/H) catalogs of Hansen and Kjaergaard (1971) and Brown et al. (1989).A set of (Fe/H) standard stars and a new DDO calibration are given whichhave rms of 0.07 dex or less for the standard star data. For normal Kgiants, CN-based values of (Fe/H) turn out to be more precise than manyhigh-dispersion results. Some zero-point errors in the latter are alsofound and new examples of continuum-placement problems appear. Thushigh-dispersion results are not invariably superior to photometricmetallicities. A review of high-dispersion and related work onsupermetallicity in K III-IV star is also given.

The vertical structure of our galaxy. I - Methods of quantitative objective prism spectroscopy The methods employed to determine the spectral types and log g and Fe/Hvalues for Galactic F-K stars in the vertical-structure investigation ofRose and Agustinho (1991) are described in detail. IIaO objective-prismplates obtained with the Curtis Schmidt telescope at CTIO using a 10-degprism and a 135-A FWHM interference filter centered at 408 nm aredigitized, and three spectral indices defined by Rose (1984) aremeasured and used to calculate the desired parameters. Results fromtests of the accuracy of this method are presented, and it is shown thatreliable separation of G dwarfs from G giants/subgiants is possible downto B = 13.

Metal-abundance determinations from near-UV spectra - Application to the mean metal abundance of M32 Near-UV spectra for the nucleus of the elliptical galaxy M32 and for 60field stars have been obtained which cover the wavelength interval3200-3900 A at a resolution of 2.5 A FWHM. A depression in thepseudocontinuum shortward of 3504 A is found to be quite sensitive tometal abundance. The results indicate that the luminosity-weighted meanmetal Fe/H abundance ratio for M32 at 3500 A is about -0.1, and that thegiant branch contributes slightly less than 30 percent of the light at4000 A. The luminosity-weighted N/Fe abundance ratio is shown to beapproximately equal to that of solar neighborhood stars.

On the (B-V) colors of the bright stars The possible causes of the dispersion of (B-V) colors of nearby stars inthe Bright Star Catalog are investigated. The distribution of (B-V)colors is presented for the entire range of spectral classes.Explanations for the dispersion in terms of a nonuniform distribution ofinterstellar absorbing material and a variability of metallicity areaddressed. A new statistical model for reddening by interstellar dustclouds is developed. It is concluded that extinction by nonuniforminterstellar matter is an important contribution to the reddening ofnearby stars, and that a part of the dispersion of (B-V) colors of Kand, possibly, M giants may be due to some unidentified variableproperty of those stars.

E. W. Fick Observatory stellar radial velocity measurements. I - 1976-1984 Stellar radial velocity observations made with the large vacuumhigh-dispersion photoelectric radial velocity spectrometer at FickObservatory are reported. This includes nearly 2000 late-type starsobserved during 585 nights. Gradual modifications to this instrumentover its first eight years of operation have reduced the observationalerror for high-quality dip observations to + or - 0.8 km/s.

Transformation equations and other aids for VRI photometry Transformations among VRI systems are commonly beset by Paschen-jumpeffects, for which fully satisfactory allowance has not previously beenmade. This paper describes two new techniques which are based on thework of Gutierrez-Moreno, and which allow fully for the effects of thePaschen jump. Values of E(V-R)/E(B-V) and E(R-I)/E(B-V) are also givenfor the Cousins system for a wide range of temperatures. These and thenew techniques contribute to a set of new transformation relations whichapply for most VRI systems; the status of the remaining systems isreviewed, and future work needed for them is described. Two majorsources of Cousins VRI data underlie the new relations; the consistencyof these sources is reviewed and found to be generally satisfactory,although more work on this question is needed. Finally, three tables oftransformed standard-star and other data are given for the Cousins andJohnson systems, and a description of ways to reproduce the latter ispresented.

Common proper motion stars in the AGK 3 A search was made of common-proper-motion (CPM) systems among AGK 3stars. The selection of physical systems was based upon the ratiobetween the angular separation (rho) and the proper motion (mu); the CPMstars found are presented in two tables. Table I lists systems withrho/mu less than 1000 years. It contains 326 entries, and the proportionof optical pairs is estimated to be 1 percent. Table II lists systemswith rho/mu in the range 1000 to 3500 years; it contains 113 systems,but only 60 percent of them are physical. Nevertheless, these systemsoften have separations larger than 10,000 AU and are the mostinteresting for the study of the tail of the distribution function ofthe semimajor axes.

Binaries among bright stars - Systems with evolved primary components and their relation to the properties of main-sequence binaries A study on the distribution of Delta m of main-sequence visual binaries(VBs), derived using previously published data, suggests that thesubgiants and early-type giants are one magnitude brighter than whenthey were dwarfs. The progenitors of late-type giants are on average F1dwarfs, while those of VBs with Delta m of less than 8, 5, or 3magnitudes are on average A7, A2, and B9.5 dwarfs, respectively. Theintrinsic logarithmic distribution of the semimajor axis (a) is derivedfrom dwarf, subgiant, and early-type giant VBs considered together, andis found to be constant for a of greater than 30 AU. Takingspectroscopic binaries into account, the proportion of single starsamong all stellar systems is found to be at the most 23 percent.

Red horizontal-branch stars in the galactic disk A quantitative, three-dimensional spectral classification systemdeveloped by Rose (1984), which uses 2.5-A resolution spectra in theblue, has been used to identify a class of red horizontal branch (RHB)stars in the Galactic disk that are similar to those in the 'metal rich'globular cluster M 71. The RHB are denoted as evolved stars by their SrII 4077 line, and are distinguished from post-main sequence starsevolving through the same region of the HR diagram on the basis of theunique appearance of their CN 3883 and 4216 A bands. The RHB starsconsitute at least 5 percent of the entire giant branch population ofthe disk.

Spectral anomalies in the Hyades and Pleiades and in field stars with active chromospheres Widened photographic image-tube spectra at 50 A/mm dispersion have beenobtained for a large number of late-type field dwarfs and giants withwell-determined atmospheric parameters and for 35 Hyades dwarfs and 31Pleiades dwarfs. The observations and data analysis are discussed, and asummary of the quantitative spectral classification system is given.This system is used to compare the Hyades and Pleiades with field stars.The cluster stars are found to exhibit several anomalies with respect tothe field stars which are not readily explained either by abundance orsurface gravity peculiarities, or by the presence of cool starspots onthe strong Ca II emission stars, or by cool companions. It is proposedthat active regions on stars with strong Ca II emission reversals haveseriously affected many of the principal spectral lines.

Masses of red giants. I - Mean initial mass from visual binary data Existing information on red-giant masses is reviewed, and an independentmethod for determining the frequency distribution of initial masses ofred giants is presented which is based on analysis of visual binarysystems containing a red giant and a main-sequence star (RG-MS systems).A list of RG-MS systems is compiled which yields an apparent frequencydistribution of the spectral types of the secondaries. This apparentdistribution is transformed to a 'true' distribution of secondary massesby accounting for certain selection effects; the true distribution isthen transformed into a distribution of initial primary masses (i.e.,initial masses of red-giant components) by assuming a form for thedistribution of mass ratios. Values in the range from 0.8 to 1.2 solarmasses and an upper limit of 1.4 solar masses are determined for themean initial masses of red giants and shown to be in satisfactoryagreement with the theoretical prediction of about 1 solar mass.

Cyanogen strengths, mixing and supermetallicity in G and K giants Wide visual binaries consisting of a G or K giant in physicalassociation with an F dwarf, observed using DDO and ubvy photometry,were used to study the possibility of mixing in the giants prior to orduring helium core burning. The two abundance indices, delta m1 of theuvby system, and delta CN of the DDO system, are compared to study thepossibility that mixing from a hydrogen burning region has affected theCN strengths of the giants.

A new upper limit to the mass loss from the central region of the Galaxy A mass loss of 200 solar masses per year, as has been conservativelysuggested if Weber is detecting gravitational waves from an isotropicsource at the galactic center, is shown to be incompatible with (1) theexistence of old wide binaries, (2) the existence of globular clustersif this loss rate has been constant over the lifetime of the Galaxy, and(3) the observed K-term, even if this loss has occurred only during thelast .1 billion years. From the orbit of omega Centauri in the galacticfield, its observed mass distribution, and its tidal radius, it is foundthat an upper limit to the mass loss from a region of approximately 1.3kpc radius around the galactic center is 1 solar mass per year, averagedover the lifetime of the Galaxy. The alternatives left open by thislimit are briefly discussed.
