Rotational velocities of A-type stars in the northern hemisphere. II. Measurement of v sin i This work is the second part of the set of measurements of v sin i forA-type stars, begun by Royer et al. (\cite{Ror_02a}). Spectra of 249 B8to F2-type stars brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoirede Haute-Provence (OHP). Fourier transforms of several line profiles inthe range 4200-4600 Å are used to derive v sin i from thefrequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of the sampleindicates that measurement error mainly depends on v sin i and thisrelative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% onaverage. The systematic shift with respect to standard values fromSlettebak et al. (\cite{Slk_75}), previously found in the first paper,is here confirmed. Comparisons with data from the literature agree withour findings: v sin i values from Slettebak et al. are underestimatedand the relation between both scales follows a linear law ensuremath vsin inew = 1.03 v sin iold+7.7. Finally, thesedata are combined with those from the previous paper (Royer et al.\cite{Ror_02a}), together with the catalogue of Abt & Morrell(\cite{AbtMol95}). Rotational velocities of A-type stars. I. Measurement of v sin i in the southern hemisphere Within the scope of a Key Programme determining fundamental parametersof stars observed by HIPPARCOS, spectra of 525 B8 to F2-type starsbrighter than V=8 have been collected at ESO. Fourier transforms ofseveral line profiles in the range 4200-4500 Å are used to derivev sin i from the frequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis ofthe sample indicates that measurement error is a function of v sin i andthis relative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 6%on average. The results obtained are compared with data from theliterature. There is a systematic shift from standard values from\citet{Slk_75}, which are 10 to 12% lower than our findings. Comparisonswith other independent v sin i values tend to prove that those fromSlettebak et al. are underestimated. This effect is attributed to thepresence of binaries in the standard sample of Slettebak et al., and tothe model atmosphere they used. CCD Speckle Observations of Binary Stars from the Southern Hemisphere. III. Differential Photometry Two hundred seventy-two magnitude difference measures of 135 double starsystems are presented. The results are derived from speckle observationsusing the Bessel V and R passbands and a fast readout CCD camera.Observations were taken at two 60 cm telescopes, namely the Helen SawyerHogg Telescope, formerly at Las Campanas, Chile, and the Lowell-TololoTelescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, Chile. Thedata analysis method is presented and, in comparing the results to thoseof Hipparcos as well as to recent results using adaptive optics, we findvery good agreement. Overall, the measurement precision appears to bedependent on seeing and other factors but is generally in the range of0.10-0.15 mag for single observations under favorable observingconditions. In four cases, multiple observations in both V and R allowedfor the derivation of component V-R colors with uncertainties of 0.11mag or less. Spectral types are assigned and preliminary effectivetemperatures are estimated in these cases.

Two-colour photometry for 9473 components of close Hipparcos double and multiple stars Using observations obtained with the Tycho instrument of the ESAHipparcos satellite, a two-colour photometry is produced for componentsof more than 7 000 Hipparcos double and multiple stars with angularseparations 0.1 to 2.5 arcsec. We publish 9473 components of 5173systems with separations above 0.3 arcsec. The majority of them did nothave Tycho photometry in the Hipparcos catalogue. The magnitudes arederived in the Tycho B_T and V_T passbands, similar to the Johnsonpassbands. Photometrically resolved components of the binaries withstatistically significant trigonometric parallaxes can be put on an HRdiagram, the majority of them for the first time. Radial velocities of HIPPARCOS southern B8-F2 type stars Radial velocities have been determined for a sample of B8-F2 type starsobserved by the Hipparcos satellite. Observations were obtained withinthe framework of an ESO key-program. Radial velocities have beenmeasured using a cross-correlation method, the templates being a grid ofsynthetic spectra. The obtained precision depends on effectivetemperature and projected rotational velocity of the star as well as ona possible asymmetry of the correlation peak generally due to secondarycomponents. New spectroscopic binaries have been detected from theseasymmetries and the variability of the measured radial velocity.Simulations of binary and triple systems have been performed. Forbinaries our results have been compared with Hipparcos binary data.Adding the variable radial velocities, the minimum binary fraction hasbeen found 60% for physical systems. Radial velocities have beendetermined for 581 B8-F2 stars, 159 being new. Taking into accountpublished radial velocities, 39% south A-type stars with V magnitudelower than 7.5 have a radial velocity. DDO photometry of E-region stars and equatorial standards - II This paper deals with the observations of 72 of McClure's equatorialstandard stars, made with the same photometer and DDO filters as wereused for the E-region stars in Cousins' Paper I in order to standardizethe observations. These observations were reduced in the natural systemand later transformed into McClure's system. Zero-point ties between theequatorial and E-region stars were also needed to standardize the lattersystem. With the exception of C(38-41), our photometry agrees as wellwith McClure's standard system as his own observations do, but both showsome small, apparently systematic, differences which are almostinevitable with a system like the DDO unless the response functions arevery well matched. Comparisons with 17 of Dean's measurements ofE-region stars show good agreement (~2 mmag) for the averagedzero-points, but there are small colour differences affecting C(35-38)and C(38-41) because of differences between the filters and thereduction procedures. This paper also deals with several problems in theDDO photometry that have implications for precision photometry ingeneral.

The ROSAT all-sky survey catalogue of optically bright OB-type stars. For the detailed statistical analysis of the X-ray emission of hot starswe selected all stars of spectral type O and B listed in the Yale BrightStar Catalogue and searched for them in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. Inthis paper we describe the selection and preparation of the data andpresent a compilation of the derived X-ray data for a complete sample ofbright OB stars.

Secondary UVBY standards in the Harvard E-regions Photoelectric uvby photometry for 201 stars which are already UBV (RI)cstandards is presented. The photoelectric data are closely tied to theCousins uvby standards and the stars should be suitable for use asfainter (7-11 mag) secondary standards.

A homogeneous catalog of new UBV and H-beta photometry of B- and A-type stars in and around the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association B- and A-type stars in and near the Sco-Cen OB association areinvestigated with UBV and H-beta photometry to acquire data relevant tothe luminosity function of Sco-Cen. The measurements generally consistof two 10-s integrations of U, B, V, (W, N) filters, and theobservations are corrected iteratively for atmospheric extinction andinstrumental response. The data presented give the mean V magnitude,mean B-V, mean U-B, and the estimated uncertainties for these values.The catalog provides a homogeneous catalog of data for a large fieldwith stellar objects delineating membership to the association Sco-Cenand that affect the luminosity function of the aggregate.

Intensive photometry of southern Be variables. II - Summer objects Results are presented of photometric campaign on some bright southern Bestars to search for periodic light variations. In order to obtain goodphase coverage, many observations were conducted from two sites withdifferent longitudes: ESO and SAAO. A large fraction of early-Be starsare found to be variable with periods close to or equal to theirrotational periods. Particular attention is devoted to the late-Bestars. Unlike the hotter members of this class, the late-Be stars do notseem to have detectable periodic light variations except for one or twostars of very small amplitude.

Micrometric measurements of visual binaries (5th list) The data resulting from 596 micrometric measurements of 152 binaries areset forth which represent observations taken on the GPO astrograph(described by Scardia, 1990). The traditional declination method is usedto track star position, and some of the measurements are related toprevious work by the author (1990). Secondary standards for the Stromgren UVBY system Observations of 158 E region stars have been made in the Stromgrensystem, using the 46-cm reflector at Cape Town. They are mostly brighterthan eighth magnitude and are intended for use as secondary standardsfor the four-color system. The E region relative zero points are definedwith a precision of + or - 0.001 mag, and the internal standard errorsof the colors life between + or - 0.001 and + or - 0.002 mag.

A photometric survey of the bright southern Be stars Repeated UBV photometric measurements were made of the 86 bright Bestars south of declination -20 deg, and a network of comparison starswas set up. From a statistical study of the differential photometry itwas found that short- or intermediate-term variability seems to beoccurring in about half of the Be stars, and to be more evident in thestars of earlier spectral type. It was also possible to identify 11individual short- or intermediate-term variables. Four of these (all ofearly B spectral type) appear to exhibit significant variability on atime-scale of a day or less. More intensive observations of one of thesestars, 28 Omega CMA, indicate short-term variations consistent with thepublished spectroscopic period of 1.37 day.

Spectral types for early-type stars observed by SKYLAB MK spectral types are presented for 246 early-type stars observed withthe S-019 ultraviolet stellar astronomy experiment on Skylab. K-linetypes are also given where applicable, and various peculiar stars areidentified. The peculiar stars include five silicon stars, a shell star,a helium-rich star, a silicon-strontium star, a chromium-europium star,and two marginal metallic-line stars.

Behavior of lambda 2800 Mg II in stellar spectra The results of measurements of the equivalent widths of the resonancedoublet of ionized magnesium lambda 2800 Mg II in the spectra of 51relatively faint stars, up to 10m, of the spectral classes B1-K5 arepresented. The observed material has been obtained by means of the spaceobservatory 'Orion 2'. Some regularities in the behavior of lambda 2800Mg II in stellar spectra have been revealed: wide and deep depression ofthe continuous spectra at 2800 A in F-G type stars; the presence of thedoublet lambda 2800 Mg II in the form of weak emission in the spectra ofcold stars (K2-K5); the presence both of the multiplet lambda 3080 Ti IIand the doublet lambda 2800 Mg II simultaneously either in emission - inthe late-type stars - or in absorption in earlier types; the existenceof combined profiles of lambda 2800 Mg II, i.e., a wide absorption linewith a weak emission in the center, in stars of the transitional class(G5-K0), etc. A well-defined empirical relationship between theequivalent width of lambda 2800 Mg II and the spectral class of the starhas been established.
