A HIPPARCOS Census of the Nearby OB Associations A comprehensive census of the stellar content of the OB associationswithin 1 kpc from the Sun is presented, based on Hipparcos positions, proper motions, and parallaxes. It is a key part of a long-term projectto study the formation, structure, and evolution of nearby young stellargroups and related star-forming regions. OB associations are unbound``moving groups,'' which can be detected kinematically because of theirsmall internal velocity dispersion. The nearby associations have a largeextent on the sky, which traditionally has limited astrometricmembership determination to bright stars (V<~6 mag), with spectraltypes earlier than ~B5. The Hipparcos measurements allow a majorimprovement in this situation. Moving groups are identified in theHipparcos Catalog by combining de Bruijne's refurbished convergent pointmethod with the ``Spaghetti method'' of Hoogerwerf & Aguilar.Astrometric members are listed for 12 young stellar groups, out to adistance of ~650 pc. These are the three subgroups Upper Scorpius, UpperCentaurus Lupus, and Lower Centaurus Crux of Sco OB2, as well as VelOB2, Tr 10, Col 121, Per OB2, alpha Persei (Per OB3), Cas-Tau, Lac OB1,Cep OB2, and a new group in Cepheus, designated as Cep OB6. Theselection procedure corrects the list of previously known astrometricand photometric B- and A-type members in these groups and identifiesmany new members, including a significant number of F stars, as well asevolved stars, e.g., the Wolf-Rayet stars gamma^2 Vel (WR 11) in Vel OB2and EZ CMa (WR 6) in Col 121, and the classical Cepheid delta Cep in CepOB6. Membership probabilities are given for all selected stars. MonteCarlo simulations are used to estimate the expected number of interloperfield stars. In the nearest associations, notably in Sco OB2, thelater-type members include T Tauri objects and other stars in the finalpre-main-sequence phase. This provides a firm link between the classicalhigh-mass stellar content and ongoing low-mass star formation. Detailedstudies of these 12 groups, and their relation to the surroundinginterstellar medium, will be presented elsewhere. Astrometric evidencefor moving groups in the fields of R CrA, CMa OB1, Mon OB1, Ori OB1, CamOB1, Cep OB3, Cep OB4, Cyg OB4, Cyg OB7, and Sct OB2, is inconclusive.OB associations do exist in many of these regions, but they are eitherat distances beyond ~500 pc where the Hipparcos parallaxes are oflimited use, or they have unfavorable kinematics, so that the groupproper motion does not distinguish it from the field stars in theGalactic disk. The mean distances of the well-established groups aresystematically smaller than the pre-Hipparcos photometric estimates. While part of this may be caused by the improved membership lists, arecalibration of the upper main sequence in the Hertzsprung-Russelldiagram may be called for. The mean motions display a systematicpattern, which is discussed in relation to the Gould Belt. Six of the 12detected moving groups do not appear in the classical list of nearby OBassociations. This is sometimes caused by the absence of O stars, but inother cases a previously known open cluster turns out to be (part of) anextended OB association. The number of unbound young stellar groups inthe solar neighborhood may be significantly larger than thoughtpreviously.

| The type of variability of Herbig Ae/Be stars The paper presents a list of 23 Herbig Ae/Be stars and Herbig Ae/Be starcandidates, compiled on the basis of 2 to 8 years of observations in theStromgren photometric system. Results of the study show that spectraltype A0 separates the stars showing large variations in their brightnessfrom stars showing small variations, with the later spectral type starsbeing the more variable. The behavior of the stars in thecolor-magnitude diagram could be divided into three classes: (1) classR, in which there is a monotonic dependence of the color index on visualbrightness, (2) class CR, in which this dependence is not monotonic, and(3) class RB, in which there is no dependence. It was also found thatthe behavior of a star in the color-magnitude diagram is dependent noton the spectral type but on the size of the variation in brightness.
| The calibration of the Stromgren photometric system for A, F and early G supergiants. I - The observational data An empirical calibration of the Stromgren uvby-beta photometric systemfor the A, F, and early G supergiants is being derived. This paperexplains the observational program and the photometric reductiontechniques used and presents a catalog of new Stromgren photometry forover 600 A, F, and G supergiants.
| Long-term photometry of variables at ESO. I - The first data catalogue (1982-1986) This paper presents the catalog of photometric data in the Stromgrensystem obtained during the first four years (October 1982 - September1986) of the Long-Term Photometry of Variables (LTPV) program at ESO.The data are available in computer-readable form.
| Walraven photometry of nearby southern OB associations Homogeneous Walraven (VBLUW) photometry is presented for 5260 stars inthe regions of five nearby southern OB associations: Scorpio Centaurus(Sco OB2), Orion OB1, Canis Major OB1, Monoceros OB1, and Scutum OB2.Derived V and (B - V) in the Johnson system are included.
| A study of the Herbig Ae-type star UX Orionis - Its remarkable behaviour in the colour-magnitude diagram, and the properties of its dust shell Stromgren uvby observations of the young irregular variable UX Ori,obtained with the 50-cm Danish telescope at ESO during the period1982-1988 and described in detail by Manfroid et al. (1990), areanalyzed. The light and color curves for two typical periods arepresented and shown to exhibit similar patterns; i.e., there is a cleartendency to become fainter and redder simultaneously. Thecolor-magnitude diagram shows distinct red and blue branches, each ofwhich can be further divided into two parts. The observations are foundto be generally consistent with the model of Grinin (1988) andVoshchinnikov et al. (1988), in which opaque dust clouds embedded in thedust envelope rotate in Keplerian orbits around the star. Thermalreemission from a dust shell with concentrations at heights of 1.4 and64 AU and temperatures 1500 and 320 K, respectively, accounts for theobserved IR excess.
| Empirical temperature calibrations for early-type stars Three temperature calibrations of suitable photometric quantities havebeen derived for O and B stars. A sample of 120 stars with reliableT(eff.) determinations has been used for establishing each calibration. The different calibrations have been critically discussed and compared.Temperature determinations for 1009 program stars have been obtainedwith an accuracy of the order of 10 percent.
| A photometric study of the Orion OB 1 association. I - Observational data. A catalog of observational data is presented for stars in the region ofthe young stellar association Orion OB 1. Photoelectric observationsobtained in the uvby-beta and UBV systems are compiled along withprevious photoelectric and spectroscopic data for all these stars aswell as for several bright members of the association with availablephotometric indices. Mean weighted values are computed for thephotometric data and summarized in tables expected to be reasonablycomplete for association members earlier than spectral type A0.Membership criteria are derived, and qualitative membershipprobabilities summarized, for the 526 stars in the final program. Theanalytical procedures are discussed for association stars of B,intermediate, and AF types. Effects of the nebular environment andvarious calibrations of Balmer-line and four-color indices areconsidered for the determination of absolute magnitudes for the B-typestars.
| Interaction between the Barnard Loop Nebula and the interstellar magnetic field New observations of the linear interstellar polarization of starlightare used to study the geometric structure of the interstellar magneticfield in the vicinity of the Barnard Loop Nebula in Orion. The observedcomplex field structure cannot be explained by a simple radial expansionof a conducting gaseous shell into an initially parallel field. Asatisfactory fit of the observations can be obtained by assuming thatthe interstellar gas in Orion is suspended in an interstellar 'magneticpocket'. It is suggested that the formation of the observed denseinterstellar clouds and very young stars in the Orion aggregate is aresult of the local structure of the interstellar magnetic field.
