Proper-motion binaries in the Hipparcos catalogue. Comparison with radial velocity data Context: .This paper is the last in a series devoted to the analysis ofthe binary content of the Hipparcos Catalogue. Aims: .Thecomparison of the proper motions constructed from positions spanning ashort (Hipparcos) or long time (Tycho-2) makes it possible to uncoverbinaries with periods of the order of or somewhat larger than the shorttime span (in this case, the 3 yr duration of the Hipparcos mission),since the unrecognised orbital motion will then add to the propermotion. Methods: .A list of candidate proper motion binaries isconstructed from a carefully designed χ2 test evaluatingthe statistical significance of the difference between the Tycho-2 andHipparcos proper motions for 103 134 stars in common between the twocatalogues (excluding components of visual systems). Since similar listsof proper-motion binaries have already been constructed, the presentpaper focuses on the evaluation of the detection efficiency ofproper-motion binaries, using different kinds of control data (mostlyradial velocities). The detection rate for entries from the NinthCatalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits (S_B^9) is evaluated, as wellas for stars like barium stars, which are known to be all binaries, andfinally for spectroscopic binaries identified from radial velocity datain the Geneva-Copenhagen survey of F and G dwarfs in the solarneighbourhood. Results: .Proper motion binaries are efficientlydetected for systems with parallaxes in excess of ~20 mas, and periodsin the range 1000-30 000 d. The shortest periods in this range(1000-2000 d, i.e., once to twice the duration of the Hipparcos mission)may appear only as DMSA/G binaries (accelerated proper motion in theHipparcos Double and Multiple System Annex). Proper motion binariesdetected among S_B9 systems having periods shorter than about400 d hint at triple systems, the proper-motion binary involving acomponent with a longer orbital period. A list of 19 candidate triplesystems is provided. Binaries suspected of having low-mass(brown-dwarf-like) companions are listed as well. Among the 37 bariumstars with parallaxes larger than 5 mas, only 7 exhibit no evidence forduplicity whatsoever (be it spectroscopic or astrometric). | An Atlas of Spectrophotometric Landolt Standard Stars We present CCD observations of 102 Landolt standard stars obtained withthe Ritchey-Chrétien spectrograph on the Cerro TololoInter-American Observatory 1.5 m telescope. Using stellar atmospheremodels, we have extended the flux points to our six spectrophotometricsecondary standards, in both the blue and the red, allowing us toproduce flux-calibrated spectra that span a wavelength range from 3050Å to 1.1 μm. Mean differences between UBVRI spectrophotometrycomputed using Bessell's standard passbands and Landolt's publishedphotometry were determined to be 1% or less. Observers in bothhemispheres will find these spectra useful for flux-calibrating spectra,and through the use of accurately constructed instrumental passbands,will be able to compute accurate corrections to bring instrumentalmagnitudes to any desired standard photometric system (S-corrections).In addition, by combining empirical and modeled spectra of the Sun,Sirius, and Vega, we calculate and compare synthetic photometry toobserved photometry taken from the literature for these three stars.
| Statistical Constraints for Astrometric Binaries with Nonlinear Motion Useful constraints on the orbits and mass ratios of astrometric binariesin the Hipparcos catalog are derived from the measured proper motiondifferences of Hipparcos and Tycho-2 (Δμ), accelerations ofproper motions (μ˙), and second derivatives of proper motions(μ̈). It is shown how, in some cases, statistical bounds can beestimated for the masses of the secondary components. Two catalogs ofastrometric binaries are generated, one of binaries with significantproper motion differences and the other of binaries with significantaccelerations of their proper motions. Mathematical relations betweenthe astrometric observables Δμ, μ˙, and μ̈ andthe orbital elements are derived in the appendices. We find a remarkabledifference between the distribution of spectral types of stars withlarge accelerations but small proper motion differences and that ofstars with large proper motion differences but insignificantaccelerations. The spectral type distribution for the former sample ofbinaries is the same as the general distribution of all stars in theHipparcos catalog, whereas the latter sample is clearly dominated bysolar-type stars, with an obvious dearth of blue stars. We point outthat the latter set includes mostly binaries with long periods (longerthan about 6 yr).
| Spectral Irradiance Calibration in the Infrared. XIV. The Absolute Calibration of 2MASS Element by element, we have combined the optical components in the threecameras of the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), and incorporateddetector quantum efficiency curves and site-specific atmospherictransmissions, to create three relative spectral response curves (RSRs).We provide the absolute 2MASS attributes associated with ``zeromagnitude'' in the JHKs bands so that these RSRs may be usedfor synthetic photometry. The RSRs tie 2MASS to the``Cohen-Walker-Witteborn'' framework of absolute photometry and stellarspectra for the purpose of using 2MASS data to support the developmentof absolute calibrators for the Infrared Array Camera and pairwisecross-calibrators between all three SIRTF instruments. We examine therobustness of these RSRs to changes in water vapor within a night. Wecompare the observed 2MASS magnitudes of 33 stars (converted from theprecision optical calibrators of Landolt and Carter-Meadows intoabsolute infrared calibrators from 1.2 to 35 μm) with ourpredictions, thereby deriving 2MASS ``zero-point offsets'' from theensemble. These offsets are the final ingredients essential to merge2MASS JHKs data with our other absolutely calibrated bandsand stellar spectra, and to support the creation of faint calibrationstars for SIRTF.
| Spectral Irradiance Calibration in the Infrared. XIII. ``Supertemplates'' and On-Orbit Calibrators for the SIRTF Infrared Array Camera We describe the technique that will be used to develop a set of on-orbitcalibrators for the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) and demonstrate thevalidity of the method for stars with spectral types either K0-M0 III orA0-A5 V. For application to SIRTF, the approach is intended to operatewith all available optical, near-infrared (NIR), and mid-infrared (MIR)photometry and to yield complete absolute spectra from UV to MIR. Oneset of stars is picked from Landolt's extensive network of optical(UBVRI) calibrators, the other from the Carter-Meadows set of faint IRstandards. Traceability to the ``Cohen-Walker-Witteborn'' framework ofabsolute photometry and stellar spectra is assured. The method is basedon the use of either ``supertemplates,'' which represent the intrinsicshapes of the spectra of K0-M0 III stars from far-UV (1150 Å) toMIR (35 μm) wavelengths, or Kurucz synthetic spectra for A0-A5 Vstars. Each supertemplate or Kurucz model is reddened according to theindividual star's extinction and is normalized using availablecharacterized optical photometry. This paper tests our capability topredict NIR (JHK) magnitudes using supertemplates or models constrainedby Hipparcos/Tycho or precision ground-based optical data. We provideabsolutely calibrated 0.275-35.00 μm spectra of 33 Landolt andCarter-Meadows optical standard stars to demonstrate the viability ofthis technique, and to offer a set of IR calibrators 100-1000 timesfainter than those we have previously published. As an indication ofwhat we can expect for actual IRAC calibration stars, we have calculatedthe absolute uncertainties associated with predicting the IRACmagnitudes for the faintest cool giant and hot dwarf in this new set ofcalibration stars.
| Speckle Interferometry of New and Problem Hipparcos Binaries. II. Observations Obtained in 1998-1999 from McDonald Observatory The Hipparcos satellite made measurements of over 9734 known doublestars, 3406 new double stars, and 11,687 unresolved but possible doublestars. The high angular resolution afforded by speckle interferometrymakes it an efficient means to confirm these systems from the ground,which were first discovered from space. Because of its coverage of adifferent region of angular separation-magnitude difference(ρ-Δm) space, speckle interferometry also holds promise toascertain the duplicity of the unresolved Hipparcos ``problem'' stars.Presented are observations of 116 new Hipparcos double stars and 469Hipparcos ``problem stars,'' as well as 238 measures of other doublestars and 246 other high-quality nondetections. Included in these areobservations of double stars listed in the Tycho-2 Catalogue andpossible grid stars for the Space Interferometry Mission.
| Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue. We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.
| Secondary photometric standard stars for the Thuan-Gunn and Johnson-Kron-Cousins systems CCD photometry is presented for 119 stars observed in the Thuan-Gunnphotometric system (the passbands vgr). The sample includes 82 stars forwhich magnitudes in this system have not previously been published.Photometry in the Johnson-Kron-Cousins photometric system (BV or UBV)has been obtained for a subsample of 85 of the stars. Of those starswhich are not primary standard stars for the Thuan-Gunn system 70observed in Gunn r, 48 observed in Gunn g, and 37 observed in Gunn vhave sufficient repeat measurements that they may be used as secondarystandard stars for CCD photometry. The typical uncertainties for themagnitudes of these stars are 0.006 mag.

| CCD surface photometry for E and S0 galaxies in the Coma cluster The paper presents CCD surface photometry in Johnson B and Gunn r for 33galaxies in the Coma cluster and for 13 galaxies in the field or inother clusters, obtained with the Danish 1.54-m telescope at the ESO, LaSilla, Chile in the period April 3-10, 1989. The data were calibratedwith standard stars. Data for all galaxies include derivations ofeffective radius, mean surface brightness, and total magnitude. Goodagreement was found between the photometry and the global parameterspresented with data of Dressler, Faber, Burstein and theircollaborators, indicating that the quality of the CCD data is fullyadequate for studies of the large-scale motions in the universe.
| A radio optical reference frame. III - Additional radio and optical positions in the Southern Hemisphere Radio and optical positions are presented for southern hemisphereextragalactic sources from the Parkes 2.7 GHz survey. Sixty-one sourceswere observed with Mark III VLBI at 8.4 GHz between Tidbinbilla,Australia, and Hartebeesthoek, South Africa. The results presented arepart of the effort to establish a global reference frame of 400extragalactic radio sources. Radio positions with about 10 milliarcsecerrors have been estimated for 39 sources not previously in the presentradio reference frame catalog, and provisional positions were obtainedfor two additional sources, bringing the total number of catalog sourcesto 276. The principal source of error is the uncalibrated ionosphere. Ofthe remaining sources five were completely undetected, six were eithertoo faint or too resolved, and nine had previous catalog positions.Optical positions on the FK5 system have also been measured for foursouthern sources using prime focus plates from the Anglo-Australian 4 mtelescope with an accuracy of 0.06 arcsec. This raises to 40 the numberof radio sources with accurately measured positions for their opticalcounterparts.
| UBV(RI)c photometry of equatorial standard stars - A direct comparison between the northern and southern systems UBV(RI)c photometry of 212 stars from Landolt's list of equatorialstandards is presented. The observations are tied to the system definedby Cousin's E-region standards. A comparison of the present results withLandolt's reveals reasonably good agreement for (V-R)c and (V-I)c, butmarked systematic differences for (B-V) and (U-B). The UBV systems ofCousins and Landolt are evidently not the same and both probably differfrom Johnson's original system.
| Walraven VBLUW photometry in Basel halo fields. I - Photometric data for selected areas SA141 (South Galactic Pole), SA94 and SA107 In 1981 a joint Swiss-Dutch program was initated to obtain photoelectricphotometry in the Walraven VBLUW system for F-G stars in fields of theBasel halo survey. The aim of this project is to determine temperature,surface gravity, and metal abundance for these stars in order to studythe distribution of the average stellar metallicity as a function ofdistance from the galactic place up to z-distances of about 1 kpc. Thispaper presents the VBLUW data for 112 program stars in Selected AreaSA141 at the South Galactic Pole, 93 stars in SA94 (l = 175 deg, b = -49deg), and 46 stars in SA107 (l = 6 deg, b = +41 deg).

| UBVRI photometric standard stars around the celestial equator It is pointed out that accurate, internally consistent, and readilyaccessible standard star photometric sequences are necessary for thecalibration of the intensity and color data which astronomers obtain atthe telescope. The photometric results provided in connection with thepresent study represent the first part of an effort which is concernedwith the presentation of UBVRI photoelectric photometric standard starsin the magnitude range from 7 to 17 over as broad a range in color aspossible. All of the photometric observations were made with a 31034type photomultiplier used in a pulse counting mode. Some 15 to 25standard stars chosen from Cousins' lists (1973, 1976) in the E-regionswere observed with an 0.4-m telescope each night along with the programstars. UBVRI standard stars were observed periodically throughout thenight. Observations with a 0.9-m telescope were also conducted. TheUBVRI photoelectric observations take into account 223 stars.

| Equatorial UBVRI photoelectric sequences From 1335 BVRI observations of 189 stars in selected areas 92-115,Landolt's (1973) network of faint UBV standards has been extended to RI. Of these stars, 173 have four or more observations. The (U-B) valuesof Landolt are adopted, and a well-observed equatorial faint-starnetwork is presented on the Johnson UBVRI photometric system.
