The elemental abundance pattern of twenty lambda Bootis candidate stars Detailed elemental abundances were derived for twenty bona fide lambdaBootis as well as two MK standard stars. Other than LTE abundances forten elements (including C and O), NLTE values for Na were determined. The group of lambda Bootis stars consists of non-magnetic, Population I,late B to early F-type dwarfs with a typical abundance pattern (Fe-peakelements being underabundant whereas C, N, O and S being almost solarabundant). Since classification resolution spectroscopy in the opticaldomain is not capable of determining the abundance of the lightelements, a detailed abundance analysis is the ultimate test for themembership of an object to this group. Another important point is thedetection of apparent spectroscopic binary systems in which two solarabundance objects mimic one metal-weak star, as proposed as a workinghypothesis by Faraggiana & Bonifacio (\cite{farag99}). From twentyprogram stars we are able to confirm or establish the membership fornine objects (HD 23258, HD 36726, HD 40588, HD 74911, HD 84123, HD91130, HD 106223, HD 111604 and HD 290799). Five stars (HD 90821, HD98772, HD 103483, HD 108765 and HD 261904) can be definitely ruled outas being members of the lambda Bootis group whereas no unambiguousdecision can be drawn for another six stars (HD 66684, HD 105058, HD120500, HD 141851, HD 201184 and HD 294253). One very important resultis the apparent overabundances found for Na which cannot be explained byaccretion or mass-loss alone. | Rotational velocities of A-type stars in the northern hemisphere. II. Measurement of v sin i This work is the second part of the set of measurements of v sin i forA-type stars, begun by Royer et al. (\cite{Ror_02a}). Spectra of 249 B8to F2-type stars brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoirede Haute-Provence (OHP). Fourier transforms of several line profiles inthe range 4200-4600 Å are used to derive v sin i from thefrequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of the sampleindicates that measurement error mainly depends on v sin i and thisrelative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% onaverage. The systematic shift with respect to standard values fromSlettebak et al. (\cite{Slk_75}), previously found in the first paper,is here confirmed. Comparisons with data from the literature agree withour findings: v sin i values from Slettebak et al. are underestimatedand the relation between both scales follows a linear law ensuremath vsin inew = 1.03 v sin iold+7.7. Finally, thesedata are combined with those from the previous paper (Royer et al.\cite{Ror_02a}), together with the catalogue of Abt & Morrell(\cite{AbtMol95}). The resulting sample includes some 2150 stars withhomogenized rotational velocities. Based on observations made atObservatoire de Haute Provence (CNRS), France. | K-Band Spectroscopy of Luminous Young Stellar Objects We present spectroscopy from 2.0 to 2.33 μm of 32 luminous youngstellar objects (YSOs), which are presumed to be precursors of HerbigAe/Be stars. From these stars, Brγ, H2, CO, He I, andFe II were found in emission with detection rates of 97%, 34%, 22%, 9%,and 3%, respectively. We compare the spectral features with those ofHerbig Ae/Be stars in the literature to investigate the spectralbehavior of intermediate- to high-mass YSOs and to search for theirrelations to the spectral energy distributions (SEDs). H2emission is detected only in Class I SEDs with particularly largespectral indices. The detection of H2 emission is related tothe degree of the dispersal of circumstellar envelopes, whereH2 molecules are probably excited by shocks from outflows. Onthe other hand, Brγ emission, which is generally thought to occurin stellar winds close to the stars, does not depend on the SEDs. Thisindicates that stellar wind from luminous YSOs does not change much fromthe embedded phase to the optically visible phase. CO emission is alsoindependent of the SEDs, but the detection rate is much lower than thatof Brγ emission. Probably, more specific physical conditionsregarding circumstellar disks and stellar radiation are necessary for COemission to take place.
| A spectroscopic survey for lambda Bootis stars. II. The observational data lambda Bootis stars comprise only a small number of all A-type stars andare characterized as nonmagnetic, Population i, late B to early F-typedwarfs which show significant underabundances of metals whereas thelight elements (C, N, O and S) are almost normal abundant compared tothe Sun. In the second paper on a spectroscopic survey for lambda Bootisstars, we present the spectral classifications of all program starsobserved. These stars were selected on the basis of their Strömgrenuvbybeta colors as lambda Bootis candidates. In total, 708 objects insix open clusters, the Orion OB1 association and the Galactic field wereclassified. In addition, 9 serendipity non-candidates in the vicinity ofour program stars as well as 15 Guide Star Catalogue stars were observedresulting in a total of 732 classified stars. The 15 objects from theGuide Star Catalogue are part of a program for the classification ofapparent variable stars from the Fine Guidance Sensors of the HubbleSpace Telescope. A grid of 105 MK standard as well as ``pathological''stars guarantees a precise classification. A comparison of our spectralclassification with the extensive work of Abt & Morrell(\cite{Abt95}) shows no significant differences. The derived types are0.23 +/- 0.09 (rms error per measurement) subclasses later and 0.30 +/-0.08 luminosity classes more luminous than those of Abt & Morrell(\cite{Abt95}) based on a sample of 160 objects in common. The estimatederrors of the means are +/- 0.1 subclasses. The characteristics of oursample are discussed in respect to the distribution on the sky, apparentvisual magnitudes and Strömgren uvbybeta colors. Based onobservations from the Observatoire de Haute-Provence, OsservatorioAstronomico di Padova-Asiago, Observatório do Pico dosDias-LNA/CNPq/MCT, Chews Ridge Observatory (MIRA) and University ofToronto Southern Observatory (Las Campanas).

| Research Note Hipparcos photometry: The least variable stars The data known as the Hipparcos Photometry obtained with the Hipparcossatellite have been investigated to find those stars which are leastvariable. Such stars are excellent candidates to serve as standards forphotometric systems. Their spectral types suggest in which parts of theHR diagrams stars are most constant. In some cases these values stronglyindicate that previous ground based studies claiming photometricvariability are incorrect or that the level of stellar activity haschanged. Table 2 is only available in electronic form at the CDS viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/367/297

| Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue. We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

| The Sirius supercluster Photometric data on the chemical composition of 927 A stars in the UrsaMajor stream, called the Sirius supercluster, were used to estimate theage and place of formation of the objects. The stars studied are in thesolar neighborhood and have been observed to be co-moving in a velocityellipsoid with a (U, V) velocity of 10.3 km/sec and concentrated in aspatial volume less than 10 pc across. The Stromgren and Geneva systemphotometric data show that the supercluster is homogeneous in chemicalcontent, although the value of the forbidden Fe/H ratio could not beprecisely determined. The supercluster age is projected to be from260-620 Myr, with the origin having been in the Carina spiral arm of theGalaxy.

| Photoelectric H-alpha line photometry of early-type stars A total of 293 bright stars of spectral types O, B, A, F and ofluminosity classes I through V have been measured with a photoelectricphotometer equipped with two interference filters of 30-A bandwidth, onecentered on H-alpha and the other at 6622 A. A correction term has beenallowed for the response of the photometric system and for the continuumenergy distribution in the two spectral regions considered. Theresulting photometric alpha indices of H-alpha line strength arecompared with previous H-alpha, H-beta, and H-gamma photometricmeasures, H-alpha equivalent widths, the MK spectral type, /u-b/, /c1/,and b-y indices of the uvby photometric system. The results emphasizethe advantage of using H-alpha line photometry to discriminate betweenemission-line effects and luminosity effects in early-type stars and todetect emission-line variability.
