X-ray emission from A-type stars
Being fully radiative, stars of spectral type A are not expected toharbor magnetic dynamos and hence such stars are not expected to produceX-ray emission. Indeed, while the X-ray detection rate of such stars inX-ray surveys is low, it is not zero and some of the brighter A-typestars have been detected on different occasions and with differentinstruments. To study systematically the puzzle of the X-ray emittingA-type stars, we carried out an X-ray study of all A-type stars listedin the Bright Star Catalogue using the ROSAT public data archive. Wefound a total of 312 bright A-type stars positionally associated withROSAT X-ray sources; we analyzed the X-ray light curves as well assearched for evidence of RV variations to identify possible late-typecompanions producing the X-ray emission. In this paper we present a listof X-ray active A-type stars, including the collected data aboutmultiplicity, X-ray luminosity and spectral peculiarities.Tables 2 et 3 are only available in electronic form athttp://www.aanda.org

H-R Diagrams Based on the HD Stars in the Michigan Spectral Catalogue and the Hipparcos Catalog
The systematic, spectroscopic two-dimensional classification of the HDstars by N. H. is approximately three-quarters complete. Over 161,000stars have been classified visually using 10° objective-prism plates(2 Å resolution) taken at CTIO with the Michigan Curtis Schmidttelescope. The published portion of this large, homogeneous database, taken from volumes 1-5 of the Michigan Spectral Catalogue (declination-90° to +5°), has been used to create an H-R diagram. TheHipparcos parallax measurements provide a large homogenous database, too. H-R diagrams of the HD stars found in both catalogs are producedfor distances to 20, 50, 100, and 200 pc.

Contributions to the Nearby Stars (NStars) Project: Spectroscopy of Stars Earlier than M0 within 40 pc-The Southern Sample
We are obtaining spectra, spectral types, and basic physical parametersfor the nearly 3600 dwarf and giant stars earlier than M0 in theHipparcos catalog within 40 pc of the Sun. Here we report on resultsfor 1676 stars in the southern hemisphere observed at Cerro TololoInter-American Observatory and Steward Observatory. These resultsinclude new, precise, homogeneous spectral types, basic physicalparameters (including the effective temperature, surface gravity, andmetallicity [M/H]), and measures of the chromospheric activity of ourprogram stars. We include notes on astrophysically interesting stars inthis sample, the metallicity distribution of the solar neighborhood, anda table of solar analogs. We also demonstrate that the bimodal nature ofthe distribution of the chromospheric activity parameterlogR'HK depends strongly on the metallicity, andwe explore the nature of the ``low-metallicity'' chromosphericallyactive K-type dwarfs.

Statistical Constraints for Astrometric Binaries with Nonlinear Motion
Useful constraints on the orbits and mass ratios of astrometric binariesin the Hipparcos catalog are derived from the measured proper motiondifferences of Hipparcos and Tycho-2 (Δμ), accelerations ofproper motions (μ˙), and second derivatives of proper motions(μ̈). It is shown how, in some cases, statistical bounds can beestimated for the masses of the secondary components. Two catalogs ofastrometric binaries are generated, one of binaries with significantproper motion differences and the other of binaries with significantaccelerations of their proper motions. Mathematical relations betweenthe astrometric observables Δμ, μ˙, and μ̈ andthe orbital elements are derived in the appendices. We find a remarkabledifference between the distribution of spectral types of stars withlarge accelerations but small proper motion differences and that ofstars with large proper motion differences but insignificantaccelerations. The spectral type distribution for the former sample ofbinaries is the same as the general distribution of all stars in theHipparcos catalog, whereas the latter sample is clearly dominated bysolar-type stars, with an obvious dearth of blue stars. We point outthat the latter set includes mostly binaries with long periods (longerthan about 6 yr).

The ROSAT Bright Survey: II. Catalogue of all high-galactic latitude RASS sources with PSPC countrate CR > 0.2 s-1
We present a summary of an identification program of the more than 2000X-ray sources detected during the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (Voges et al.1999) at high galactic latitude, |b| > 30degr , with countrate above0.2 s-1. This program, termed the ROSAT Bright Survey RBS, isto more than 99.5% complete. A sub-sample of 931 sources with countrateabove 0.2 s-1 in the hard spectral band between 0.5 and 2.0keV is to 100% identified. The total survey area comprises 20391deg2 at a flux limit of 2.4 x 10-12 ergcm-2 s-1 in the 0.5 - 2.0 keV band. About 1500sources of the complete sample could be identified by correlating theRBS with SIMBAD and the NED. The remaining ~ 500 sources were identifiedby low-resolution optical spectroscopy and CCD imaging utilizingtelescopes at La Silla, Calar Alto, Zelenchukskaya and Mauna Kea. Apartfrom completely untouched sources, catalogued clusters and galaxieswithout published redshift as well as catalogued galaxies with unusualhigh X-ray luminosity were included in the spectroscopic identificationprogram. Details of the observations with an on-line presentation of thefinding charts and the optical spectra will be published separately. Here we summarize our identifications in a table which contains opticaland X-ray information for each source. As a result we present the mostmassive complete sample of X-ray selected AGNs with a total of 669members and a well populated X-ray selected sample of 302 clusters ofgalaxies with redshifts up to 0.70. Three fields studied by us remainwithout optical counterpart (RBS0378, RBS1223, RBS1556). While the firstis a possible X-ray transient, the two latter are isolated neutron starcandidates (Motch et al. 1999, Schwope et al. 1999).

The ROSAT all-sky survey catalogue of optically bright main-sequence stars and subgiant stars
We present X-ray data for all main-sequence and subgiant stars ofspectral types A, F, G, and K and luminosity classes IV and V listed inthe Bright Star Catalogue that have been detected as X-ray sources inthe ROSAT all-sky survey; several stars without luminosity class arealso included. The catalogue contains 980 entries yielding an averagedetection rate of 32 percent. In addition to count rates, sourcedetection parameters, hardness ratios, and X-ray fluxes we also listX-ray luminosities derived from Hipparcos parallaxes. The catalogue isalso available in electronic form via anonymous ftp tocdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html

The data are presented in absolute energy unitsW/m(2) m, with a step of 2.5 nm and with an accuracy not lower than1.5--2.0%.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

The determination of T_eff_ of B, A and F main sequence stars from the continuum between 3200 A and 3600 A.
A method of determination of the effective temperature of B, A and Fmain sequence stars is proposed, using the slope of the continuumbetween 3200A and 3600A. The effective temperature calibration is basedon a sample of stars with energy distributions known from UV to the red.We have determined the Balmer jump and the effective temperatures for235 main sequence stars. The temperatures found have been compared withthose derived by Underhill et al. (1979), Kontizas & Theodossiou(1980), Theodossiou (1985), Morossi & Malagnini (1985). Thecomparison showed good agreement for most of the stars in common. On theother hand, the temperatures derived from the reddening-free colourfactor QUV, from the colour index (m1965-V) and from (B-V), given inGulati et al. (1989), are systematically lower than our temperatures, however the differences are within one-sigma error.

The early A type stars - Refined MK classification, confrontation with Stroemgren photometry, and the effects of rotation
The MK classification system for the early A-type stars is refined, anda parallel system of standards for the broad-lined stars is introduced. With this improved system, stars may be classified with significantlygreater precision than before. It is shown that spectral types in thissystem are not systematically affected by rotational line broadening. Atotal of 372 early A-type stars are classified, and a confrontation ofthese spectral types with Stroemgren photometry reveals a number ofsystematic photometric effects of rotation. In particular, high v sin istars are systematically redder than low v sin i stars of the samespectral type, and the beta index is weakened by rotation. It isconcluded that precise spectral classification in conjunction withStroemgren and H-beta photometry can potentially provide a valuablecheck and input to the theory of the atmospheres of rotating stars.

Observed and computed spectral flux distribution of non-supergiant O9-G8 stars. III - Determination of T(eff) for the stars in the Breger Catalogue
The effective temperatures and angular diameters of nonsupergiant O9-G8stars are determined from visible spectrophotometry. The results, whichrefer to 302 stars included in the Breger Catalogue, are derived fromthe comparison between the observed flux distributions and thepredictions of Kurucz's models (1979). The uncertainties to be expectedin individual results are discussed; their sizes are of the order of 5percent in effective temperature and 10 percent in angular diameter.

The local system of early type stars - Spatial extent and kinematics
Published uvby and H-beta photometric data and proper motions arecompiled and analyzed to characterize the structure and kinematics ofthe bright early-type O-A0 stars in the solar vicinity, with a focus onthe Gould belt. The selection and calibration techniques are explained, and the data are presented in extensive tables and graphs and discussedin detail. The Gould belt stars of age less than 20 Myr are shown togive belt inclination 19 deg to the Galactic plane and node-lineorientation in the direction of Galactic rotation, while the symmetricaldistribution about the Galactic plane and kinematic properties (purecircular differential rotation) of the belt stars over 60 Myr oldresemble those of fainter nonbelt stars of all ages. The unresolveddiscrepancy between the expansion observed in the youngest nearby starsand the predictions of simple models of expansion from a point isattributed to the inhomogeneous distribution of interstellar matter.

HEAO 1 observations of quiescent X-ray emission from flare stars
The HEAO A-2 data were searched at the positions of the 70 known flarestars for evidence of X-ray emission. Thirteen of them appear to bedetected at the equal to or greater than 3 sigma level. Their X-rayluminosities in the 2-20 keV energy band are in the range 5 x 10 to the28th - 6 x 10 to the 29th ergs/s and L(x)/L(bal) approximately 0.0001 to0.01. There were no detectable X-ray flare events during the time ofHEAO 1 observations. This detection, therefore, refers to the quiescentstate X-ray emission from the coronae of these stars. It appears thatintense coronae belonging to fairly active flare stars are beingobserved. X-ray variability over periods of 6 months was observed forseveral of them.

Photometric search for AP stars among blue stragglers in open clusters
A photometric study of 27 blue stragglers in 9 open clusters ispresented. Besides uvby data fluxes in Maitzen's (1976) g1and g2 passbands where g2 is centered in the 5200A flux depression of Ap stars are obtained. The investigated clustersare older than 10 to the eighth years. Their blue stragglers show(b-y)zero values in the spectral range between B 3 and F 0,the typical region of peculiar A-type stars. The percentage of starswith 5200 A peculiarity among the blue stragglers turned out to be 8.3%.Another 15% of the investigated stars show mild photometric peculiarity. The value of definite peculiar stars agrees with the percentage of Apstars of the same spectral class range in open clusters of similar age(greater than 10 to the eighth years) and in the Galactic field.

Absolute luminosity calibration of Stroemgren's 'late group'
A statistical parallax method based on the principle of maximumlikelihood is used to calibrate absolute luminosities for samples ofcooler stars constituting the 'late group' defined by Stromgren (1966).The samples examined include 415 stars of all luminosity classes and asubset comprising 86 main-sequence stars. Linear calibration relationsinvolving the Stromgren beta, (b-y), and bracketted c1 indices arederived which yield mean absolute magnitudes with an accuracy of 0.09magnitude for the overall sample and 0.13 magnitude for themain-sequence subsample. Several second-order relations are considered, and the results are compared with Crawford's (1975) calibrations as wellas with mean absolute magnitudes obtained from trigonometric parallaxes. The possible effect of interstellar absorption on the calibrationrelations is also investigated.

Standard stars for photoelectric H-alpha line photometry
Photoelectric measurements of H-alpha line strengths are presented for100 early-type stars intended for use as standard stars in a photometricH-alpha system to supplement the H-beta standard system. Themeasurements were made with two small half-bandwidth interferencefilters centered on H-alpha, and the stellar spectral types included O,B, A, F, and G0. Several stars with variable H-alpha strengths arenoted, and photometric indices of the H-alpha line strengths arecompared with those of previously measured H-beta strengths for 94 starsand the spectrophotometric H-alpha indices for 36 stars. It is shownthat the value of the H-alpha index is an excellent luminosity criterionfor early-type supergiants and heavily reddened OB stars later thanabout O9, and that it is possible to discriminate between emission-linestars of low luminosity and nonemission stars of high luminosity of thesame spectral type by simultaneous measurement of the H-alpha and H-betaindices of OB-type stars. Stars with variable hydrogen-line emission andpeculiarities in their spectra may be identified by their location in analpha-beta plot.
