The Geneva-Copenhagen survey of the Solar neighbourhood. Ages, metallicities, and kinematic properties of 14 000 F and G dwarfs We present and discuss new determinations of metallicity, rotation, age,kinematics, and Galactic orbits for a complete, magnitude-limited, andkinematically unbiased sample of 16 682 nearby F and G dwarf stars. Our63 000 new, accurate radial-velocity observations for nearly 13 500stars allow identification of most of the binary stars in the sampleand, together with published uvbyβ photometry, Hipparcosparallaxes, Tycho-2 proper motions, and a few earlier radial velocities,complete the kinematic information for 14 139 stars. These high-qualityvelocity data are supplemented by effective temperatures andmetallicities newly derived from recent and/or revised calibrations. Theremaining stars either lack Hipparcos data or have fast rotation. Amajor effort has been devoted to the determination of new isochrone agesfor all stars for which this is possible. Particular attention has beengiven to a realistic treatment of statistical biases and errorestimates, as standard techniques tend to underestimate these effectsand introduce spurious features in the age distributions. Our ages agreewell with those by Edvardsson et al. (\cite{edv93}), despite severalastrophysical and computational improvements since then. We demonstrate,however, how strong observational and theoretical biases cause thedistribution of the observed ages to be very different from that of thetrue age distribution of the sample. Among the many basic relations ofthe Galactic disk that can be reinvestigated from the data presentedhere, we revisit the metallicity distribution of the G dwarfs and theage-metallicity, age-velocity, and metallicity-velocity relations of theSolar neighbourhood. Our first results confirm the lack of metal-poor Gdwarfs relative to closed-box model predictions (the ``G dwarfproblem''), the existence of radial metallicity gradients in the disk,the small change in mean metallicity of the thin disk since itsformation and the substantial scatter in metallicity at all ages, andthe continuing kinematic heating of the thin disk with an efficiencyconsistent with that expected for a combination of spiral arms and giantmolecular clouds. Distinct features in the distribution of the Vcomponent of the space motion are extended in age and metallicity,corresponding to the effects of stochastic spiral waves rather thanclassical moving groups, and may complicate the identification ofthick-disk stars from kinematic criteria. | The Photometric Variability of Sun-like Stars: Observations and Results, 1984--1995 Using differential Stromgren b, y photometry, we monitored thebrightness variations of 41 program stars and their 73 comparison starsfrom 1984 through 1995. The predominantly main-sequence program starsspanned ranges of temperature and mean chromospheric activity centeredon solar values. About 40% of all the stars showed measurablevariability, typically at levels below 0.01 mag (~1%), on bothnight-to-night and year-to-year timescales. The variability correlatedwith mean chromospheric activity and advancing spectral type. We presentdifferential light curves and statistical descriptions of ourobservations.
| Rotation of solar-like main sequence stars. The results of the photometric survey of 16 solar-type, active, fieldstars are presented. During our observations 9 stars showed appreciablelight variability with amplitudes of a few hundredths of a magnitude butfor three of them periods could not be determined. Most of the observedvariable stars have periods shorter than about 10 days. It is suggestedthat, similarly as is observed in the Hyades cluster, small amplitudelight variations are quite common among active field solar-type dwarfswith rotation periods around one week or less. A strong modulation ofamplitude of some variable stars over the time scale of years isdemonstrated. The amplitude may sometimes decrease even below thedetectability threshold. A special case is HD 17576 - a visual binaryconsisting of a G0 dwarf and a much fainter hot subdwarf. It has thelargest amplitude of all the stars observed, which suggests an intensespot activity, a very strong H and K line core emission and a very highX-ray emission flux, close to the saturation limit. Yet its variabilityperiod is equal to 18.74 days - almost an order of magnitude longer thanexpected for such an active dwarf.
| Long-term monitoring of active stars. IV. UBV(RI)_c_ observations obtained at La Silla in December 1989. High-precision UBV(RI)_c_ photometry of 23 selected acitve stars,collected at the European Southern Observatory (La Silla, Chile) overthe period 9-28 December 1989, is presented. This paper is part of alarger program focusing on the global properties and evolution of activestars and is aimed at establishing a time-extended database which cangive important clues on topics such as the stability of the spottedareas, differential rotation and solar-like cycles. Significantevolution of the wave-like light curves, period variations and, in mostcases, evidence for long-term variability of the global degree ofspottedness are found for the observed stars. Some spectralclassifications are rediscussed and evidence for a newly discoveredvariable star is given.
| Stroemgren photometry of F- and G-type stars brighter than V = 9.6. I. UVBY photometry Within the framework of a large photometric observing program, designedto investigate the Galaxy's structure and evolution, Hβ photometryis being made for about 9000 stars. As a by-product, supplementary uvbyphotometry has been made. The results are presented in a cataloguecontaining 6924 uvby observations of 6190 stars, all south ofδ=+38deg. The overall internal rms errors of one observation(transformed to the standard system) of a program star in the interval6.5

II - UBV(RI)c observations at ESO during January-March 1989 In the framework of a research program focusing on the global propertiesand evolution of photospheres and outer atmospheres of active stars, theauthor presents high-precision UBV(RI)c photometry of 15 selected RSCVn, BY Dra, and FK Com-type systems observed at the European SouthernObservatory (La Silla, Chile) in the period January-March 1989.Significant evolution both in amplitude and shape of the wave-like lightcurves is found with respect to previous observations. Evidence forlong-term variability for most of the observed stars is also presented,and some of the spectral classifications are rediscussed.
| UBVRI observations of southern hemisphere active stars. II - 1987 data Results are presented on high-precision UBV (RI)c photometricobservations of 13 southern-hemisphere RS CVn, BY Dra, and FK Com-typevariable stars, carried out in December 1987 at the European SouthernObservatory at La Silla (Chile). Compared with previous observations,significant changes of the light curves were detected, both in amplitudeand shape.
| Hyades and Sirius supercluster members brighter than magnitude(V) 7.1. I - The first six hours of right ascension This is the first of four papers listing the probable members of theHyades and Sirius superclusters among stars brighter than V = 7.1 mag.The star sample is contained in the Bright Star Catalogue and itsSupplement, augmented with a further supplement of 550 stars foundduring various observing programs over the past 40 years. Accurate,four-color and H-beta, or (RI), photometry is available for most of thesupercluster members. The criteria for membership are the comparisons ofthe proper motion, radial velocity, and luminosity obtained from thesupercluster parameters with the observed motions and the luminosityderived from the photometric parameters. New proper motions, based onall available catalogs, have been derived for the additional 550 starsdiscussed here, as well as for all supercluster members.
