Continuum versus line polarization at the center of the Orion nebula New polarization observations have been performed at the center of theOrion nebula with a 10arcsec spatial resolution, through three filterswhich allow to study separately the continuum near 5300 Å,Hβ, and the [O III] λ5007 Å. The authors provide forthe first time line emission polarization measurements which are freefrom the contamination by the continuum. Their Hβ measurements makeit possible to determine the intensity and polarization of the atomiccontinuum which can be subtracted from the primary continuum data.Eventually, they get the true percentage of polarization Pscafor the scattered continuum. These data have been compared with thetheoretical model by White et al. (1980). The observations yieldPsca values which are generally 2 to 3 times greater than thecomputed figures. The measurements reveal a good similarity of theHβ and the [O III] polarization maps which rules out possibleintrinsic effects. The polarization of the scattered [O III] radiationhas been investigated with the help of a basic geometrical model. Finally, the polarization of the Trapezium stars has been measured.
